The city is currently in Tier 3, where wedding ceremonies can take place with up to 15 people, but wedding receptions are not allowed.

Interrupted! The wedding of Zayn Malik’s younger sister was broken up by police for breaching COVID regulations with officers issuing fines to relatives of the former One Direction star, MailOnline can reveal

Zayn’s younger sister Waliyha, 22 married ex-convict Junaid Khan, 24, on Saturday in a traditional Islamic ceremony in a marquee that was erected in Saffa’s back garden which was followed by a reception in the same location.

Officers arrived at around 6pm after being called by neighbours with West Yorkshire police confirming that a number of other people were issued with fixed penalty notices.

A spokesman told MailOnline: ‘Police attended an address just after 6pm on Saturday evening following a report of a large party.

‘A group of people were fined inside the address and fixed penalty notices were issued as a breach of coronavirus restrictions had been committed.’

Saffa’s home is located barely 100 metres from where Zayn’s parents live but MailOnline can also reveal that his father Yaser refused to walk the short distance because of concerns over Junaid’s criminal past.

Zayn, 27, was also nowhere to be seen in snaps from the nuptials, while his girlfriend Gigi Hadid sent Waliyha a message saying she ‘wished’ she was there. But it is believed that the singer was unable to attend because of work commitments.

In 2107, Khan was jailed for five years for a carjacking incident while in 2104 he was sentenced to 15 months in a young offender’s institution, suspended for two years, for his involvement in a family dispute that led to a relative being stabbed.

Zayn’s mother Tricia singlehandedly took care of all the arrangements for her daughter’s big day with Yaser refusing to get involved because of his opposition to the marriage.

She also accompanied Waliyha as she emerged from the family home to walk to her sister’s home for the ceremony but Yaser remained defiantly inside.

Latif Yasin, who provided the marquee and helped organise Saturday’s event, told MailOnline: ‘It all started at around 10am and there were a lot of people there.

‘I put out six tables, organised the stage and also two larger tables for the catering. There wasn’t any loud music, but it was quite a lively event.

‘Everything was going really well throughout the day and then in the early evening the police arrived. They spoke with Tricia and warned her that the wedding was breaking COVID laws and told her that it needed to end, and everybody had to go home.’

Mr Yasin, who runs Flawless, a wedding and events company based in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire added: ‘I don’t know the exact details, but I was told that Tricia and some other relatives who organised the wedding were fined. The police warned everybody that if they had to return, they would issue even bigger fines and they could also be arrested.

‘But there was no problem after that because everybody just went home.’

A neighbour told MailOnline: ‘It was quite obvious that there were more than 15 people there and it was quite a noisy gathering. This is a very quiet area and clearly somebody called the police, which was the right thing to do.

‘Some of Zayn’s family got fined but we don’t know exactly who.’

Referring to Yaser’s absence from his daughter’s wedding, Mr Yasin added: ‘Normally I always speak with the bride and groom’s parents.

‘I asked where the bride’s father was and one of his relatives told me that he wasn’t attending because he’s not happy at all with Waliyha’s choice of partner.

Nowhere to be seen: The wedding took place in Bradford, but Zayn and girlfriend Gigi Hadid, 25, have been living in Pennsylvania amid the pandemic

‘I was told not to mention it all and you could see that everybody knew about Yaser not being happy, but nobody spoke about it. I wouldn’t say it ruined things, but it certainly was hanging over the whole occasion.’

Zayn’s mother Tricia refused to comment when asked about the wedding being brought to an abrupt end by police and Yasser’s opposition to the marriage.

In 2017, Khan and accomplice Adam Takolia reportedly followed a Seat Leon Cupra before confronting a ‘vulnerable’ elderly woman in Skipton.

The court heard at the time that it was a ‘steal to order’ robbery and the woman was victim to a car-jacking on her driveway, after the defendants followed her home.

The victim was driving her son’s sporty-looking car at the time and the judge said it would have looked like it was worth several thousands of pounds.

The pair were understood to be wearing balaclavas at the time and threatened her with a weapon, thought to be a screwdriver, before driving off with the car.

The judge told how the accused held the weapon ‘dagger-style’ across her chest.

Describing the carjacking as ‘chilling’, Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC said: ‘You targeted a vulnerable lady on her own.

‘At her home, in her drive alone and you carried out your planned expedition with a degree of skill that is chilling. And you have shown no remorse, not one iota.’

The stolen car and a hired vehicle, another Seat Leon which the criminals had been using, were driven off. Parts from the stolen Cupra were later found in Bradford.

In 2014, Khan was convicted along with his uncle who ‘saw red’ over a family disputed and stabbed a relative.

The court heard that Khan and his uncle, Mohammed Rizwanattacked relative Mohammed Quadir Ahmed.

Judge David Hatton QC said the offence had been committed against the background of an ongoing and unpleasant family dispute.

He added:‘Having initially assaulted him outside a shop you pursued him into a house where he had sought refuge and attacked him viciously with a steering lock inflicting blows to his head and other parts of his body and also kicking him,” the judge said.

Khan, who was 18 at the time of his conviction but 17 when the attack took place, pleaded guilty to a lesser offence of wounding Mr Ahmed during the same incident while Rizwan was convicted to four-and-a-half years imprisonment.
