Will Smith’s now infamous Oscars slap occurred during the 94th Academy Awards on Monday, March 27. The annual ceremony was hosted by comedians Amy Schumer, Regina Hall and Wanda Sykes.

Among the A-list presenters was comedian Chris Rock, who hit the stage during the ceremony to present the award for Best Documentary Feature Film.

Before handing out the trophy, Rock made an ill-timed joke about Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head. Jada has openly spoken about suffering from alopecia in the past.

Will, clearly enraged by the jab, stormed the stage and proceeded to slap Rock for making the joke.

Smith’s shocking assault occurred moments before he took home the Best Actor gong for his portrayal of tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams’s devoted father in the film King Richard.

Infamous: Will Smith’s now infamous Oscars slap of Chris Rock occurred during the 94th Academy Awards on Monday, March 27

In a rambling acceptance speech a sobbing Smith admitted that ‘love makes you do crazy things’ – but tellingly failed to apologize to Rock for his assault. He did, however, apologize to the Academy and his fellow nominees.

In response to the incident, the Academy placed a 10 year Oscars ban on Smith. In a statement, they declared that the 2022 Academy Awards were ‘overshadowed by the unacceptable and harmful behavior we saw Mr Smith exhibit on stage.’

It took four months for Smith to issue an apology to Rock, which came in the form of an emotional YouTube video.

‘Chris, I apologize to you. My behavior was unacceptable and I’m here whenever you’re ready to talk,’ he said directly into the camera. Smith noted that he has since reached out to Rock but the comedian was not ready.

Smith has been working hard to rehabilitate his once squeaky clean image by speaking openly about that ‘horrific night’ and admitting his wrongdoings.

Smith recently appeared on The Daily Show With Trevor Noah for his first TV interview earlier this week where he discussed the moment he walked on stage and hit Rock after the comedian made a joke about Jada’s hair.

Reflecting on the slap, he said: ‘That was a horrific night, as you can imagine. You know, there’s many nuances and complexities to it. But at the end of the day, I just – I lost it, you know?

‘And I guess what I would say, you just never know what somebody’s going through, you know? In the audience right now, you are sitting next to strangers, and somebody’s mother died last week. Somebody’s child is sick. Somebody just lost their job. Somebody just found out their spouse cheated.

‘It’s like – there’s all these things, and they’re strangers, and you just don’t know what is going on with people. And I was going through something that night. Not that that justifies my behavior at all.’

The star urged people to ‘be nice to each other’, while he noted the way he took his own struggle and turned it into a difficult incident for ‘other people’.

He added: ‘I guess the thing that was most painful for me is, I took my hard and made it hard for other people. I understood the idea, they say hurt people hurt people.’

Will referenced his own difficult childhood, and described his behavior in the moment as someone he doesn’t ‘want to be’.

He explained: ‘It was a lot of things. It was the little boy that watched his father beat up his mother. All of that just bubbled up in that moment.

‘I just – that is not who I want to be… I was gone. That was a rage that had been bottled for a really long time. I understand the pain.’

He noted the way the incident impacted his own family too.

He recalled: ‘It was like, my nephew is nine. And he is the sweetest little boy. He’s like – we came home, and it’s like, he had stayed up late to see his uncle Will, and we are sitting in my kitchen and he is on my lap and he is holding the Oscar and he is just like, ‘Why did you hit that man, uncle Will?”

Emancipation is Smith’s first film since the Oscars slap.

Emancipation is a historical thriller directed by Antoine Fuqua, in which the Fresh Prince actor stars as an enslaved man named Peter who escapes from a Louisiana plantation and braves treacherous territory and slave hunters to make it up north to Union territory, where he is able to join the fight against the Confederacy.

The film was inspired by the life of a former slave immortalized in horrifying photos of his back, which was covered in spiderwebbing keloid scars from repeated whippings.

Following the shocking slap, Variety originally reported that Apple planned to delay the film until 2023 to let the controversy die down.

However, it is now set for a December 2 release in theaters, followed by a streaming release on Apple TV+ on December 9.

The streaming service may have still given up its plans of having a hit for awards season, as the film may lose out on potential profits due to the short theatrical window.

Speaking to Fox 5’s Good Day DC, Smith said he ‘completely understands’ if people are deterred from watching his new film Emancipation.

‘I completely understand — if someone is not ready, I would absolutely respect that and allow them their space to not be ready,’ he said.

The Seven Pounds actor added that he hopes his actions won’t negatively affect the team who have worked on the film, which is his first project since the slap.

He said: ‘My deepest concern is my team – Antoine [Fuqua] has done what I think is the greatest work of his entire career.

‘The people on this team have done some of the best work of their entire careers, and my deepest hope is that my actions don’t penalize my team. At this point, that’s what I’m working for.’
