Whoopi Goldberg returns to The View after battle with coronavirus: ‘I feel like I opened the window and got COVID’
Whoopi Goldberg made her return to The View on Monday after a battle with COVID-19 during the show’s holiday break.
Goldberg, 66, appeared on the show along with castmates Ana Navarro, 50, and Sunny Hostin, 53, who are both recovering from cases of the virus, as well as Sara Haines, 44, who isolated after she was a close contact with someone who tested positive.
‘If you find yourself coming down with COVID or having to isolate because you’ve been around somebody with it, then you got to spend some time figuring out, “How am I going to not become cranky or get really crabby or nasty to people?”‘ Goldberg said.

She continued: ‘You got to watch television, redesign stuff, because it feels like it’s everywhere … I feel like I opened the window and got COVID, because it was just blowing by on the waves in the wind.’
Goldberg emphasized how the virus made for a difficult situation as it continues to evolve, with infection rates spiking as of late due to the omicron variant.
‘It’s going to continue to change, because, you know, the CDC is learning and they’re trying to keep us on top of what they’re learning, and this is fluid,’ she said. ‘I don’t know what more they can do to get people to understand what this is right now, we’re in the midst of a pandemic, we don’t know where it is, it’s everywhere.
‘It’s like a fart in a dust storm, you turn around and there it is, you just don’t know … it goes to show you, you have to be vigilant you have to protect yourself, protect your family, and protect the people around you.’

Ana Navarro said she was feeling ‘pretty good’ after testing positive and has been in isolation reading and watching TV as she recovers. She noted how both she and Hostin had previously had COVID-19, and had experienced mild symptoms because they were vaccinated.
Hostin said she was ‘feeling better’ after catching the virus over the holiday break, and had kept herself busy watching TV and learning an African dance from TikTok.
‘That’s how I kind of kept myself busy for 10 days, but I didn’t isolate just for five days like the current CDC guidelines,’ she said. ‘I wanted to make sure I was testing negative before I went out of my … isolation, so I guess things are being advised a little differently now, but I kept myself kind of busy.’
Sara Haines said she did not catch the virus but was a close contact as she had been near those who tested positive, and spent her time redecorating.

Goldberg made a remote appearance on the show last week when she detailed viewers on her health battle after she tested positive for breakthrough COVID-19 amid the ongoing surge due to the omicron variant.
‘I left a couple of weeks ago, just before the break, because somebody I had been around tested positive for coronavirus, so I left,’ Goldberg said Wednesday. ‘So I’ve been gone a long time, I feel. And I was all excited and, you know, they have to test us, and so they sent people to test me, and they tested me.’
She said that she was informed that she tested positive – which came as a shock to her as she was vaccinated and boosted – and kept to her home.
‘That’s the thing about the omicron, you just don’t know where it is,’ she said. ‘You don’t know where it is, who’s got it, who’s passing it.’
Goldberg said she was puzzled after seemingly taking every precaution to avoid catching the contagious virus.
‘It’s one of those things where you think I’ve done everything I was supposed to do,’ she said. ‘Yeah, it doesn’t stop omicron, and that’s the problem with a variant, because it gets stronger and does different stuff to you, so, you know, unless everybody gets vaccinated this is what we’re going to be facing for the next, you know, little while.’
