What You Need to Know About Season Three of 'Stranger Things'

Now that Endgame and the final season of Game of Thrones have both been and gone, we’re all going to need something to sate our inner geek. Fortunately, we don’t have long to wait until Netflix drops the third season of its nostalgia-infused supernatural adventure show, Stranger Things. Here’s everything we know about Season three so far.

The release date:

The third season of Stranger Things will begin streaming on Netflix on July 4. While the platform traditionally drops new content on Fridays, it looks like the 4th of July holiday will feature in Season Three; the poster shows the young cast watching the fireworks, and the tagline “one summer can change everything” suggests that the Stephen King-influeced coming-of-age narrative the show has been exploring for the last few years will continue.

Watch the trailer:

A trailer for Season Three dropped earlier this year, confirming that the action will take place during the summer of 1985, in contrast to the Halloween setting of Season Two.

Netflix also posted a teaser clip this week, featuring Max’s dirtbag older brother Billy (Dacre Montgomery) at the pool, being ogled by local moms. If this means season three is going to spend more time exploring the suburban Eighties weirdness of Hawkins, Indiana as well as the Upside Down, we’re all for it!

Who is in Season Three:

The entire cast of youngsters is returning, including Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), the four besties Will (Noah Schnapp), Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) and Lucas (Caleb McLoughlin), and last season’s new addition to the gang, Max (Sadie Sink). Adult leads Joyce (Winona Ryder) and Hopper (David Harbour) will also be coming back, along with Nancy (Natalia Dyer), Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) and everybody’s favorite babysitter, Steve (Joe Keery).

Season three will also feature a new lead character, Robin, played by Maya Hawke. Robin has been described as an “alternative girl” who is bored of her day job, and who discovers a dark secret in Hawkins.

What we know about each episode:

Season three will have fewer episodes than season two, coming in at eight instalments like Season One, instead of nine. Netflix has released a short video revealing the title of each new chapter: “Suzie, Do You Copy?” “The Mall Rats,” “The Case of the Missing Lifeguard,” “The Sauna Test,” “The Source,” “The Birthday,” “The Bite,” and “The Battle of Starcourt.”

While “The Mall Rats” could be a reference to the Kevin Smith film of the same name, we suspect is also has something to do with the rodents featured in this short teaser clip from back in March…

Unresolved storylines season three needs to address:

Last season introduced Eleven’s long-lost sister, Eight, a runaway with psychokinetic powers of her own. The Duffer Brothers have been tight-lipped about whether Eight will make a comeback in Season Three, although they have hinted that more of the action will take place outside the main setting of Hawkins. And as for last season’s terrifying monster, the Mind Flayer, yeah. It’s still out there. “They’ve shut the door on the Mind Flayer, but not only is it still there in the Upside Down, it’s very much aware of the kids, and particularly Eleven,” Ross Duffer told The Hollywood Reporter shortly after season two was released, implying that it could be reappearing in season three.
