Wenger is going to make it difficult for Emery to succeed at Arsenal

Unai Emery is going to find it difficult to succeed at Arsenal because of the lingering scent of Arsene Wenger at the club.

That’s according to Alan Shearer, who says the Spaniard will need around 18 months and three transfer windows to shape this Gunners team and make it his own.

Emery took the reins of the north London club this summer after Wenger’s 22 years in charge, and has overseen two matches in the Premier League.

Both games have ended in defeat, but to be fair to the new Gunners boss, he has faced two difficult teams in Manchester City and Chelsea.

And Shearer believes that Emery will need time to make Arsenal his own.

"It is going to be hugely difficult for Unai Emery to get rid of the scent of Arsene Wenger at Arsenal," Shearer wrote in The Sun.

"Wenger’s stamp is all over that football club – in and around the training ground, in and around the Emirates."

Much has been made of Emery attempting to instill a new philosophy at Arsenal, as some players have struggled to play out from the back.

He has made a handful of new signings, but will need to bring in a few more faces before he truly puts his stamp on the Gunners.

"You cannot expect a guy to be in a club for six weeks and miraculously turn it around and for everything to be rosy straight away," Shearer added.

"He will probably need 18 months and three transfer windows to get rid of Arsene Wenger’s shadow, you can only really judge him after that."
