But… was it a good end?

We want to know what YOU thought, but before voting let’s take another look at what worked and didn’t about the ending…

NEGATIVES

Bran basically never showed his value as the Three Eyed Raven during the two seasons preceding his ascension to the Iron Throne. While Tyrion makes a good case, all we’ve really seen him use his powers for is grabbing personal memories and a sweet wheelchair design. Remember when his sisters almost killed each other last season, and he could have stopped the conflict from ever happening by telling them what Littlefinger was up to? And he just sat and watched during the Battle of Winterfell! Tyrion makes a good case, but having him become King feels out of nowhere.

Daenerys’ character arc felt rushed and clumsy. While there are many moments seeded throughout the series that feel like mile markers on a journey to becoming more of a ruthless conquerer than a peaceful ruler, she always championed the innocent. The turn to murdering the impoverished women and children taking refuge behind the walls of King’s Landing did not feel like the character, even at her most vicious. She could have turned villainous without being turned into an evil, genocidal war criminal supervillain.

In fact, we could have kept the conflict of rooting for more than one side, as we used to on this show — remember shades of grey? Instead they made her a “Mad Queen” so audiences wouldn’t hate their precious Jon Snow when he made what should have felt like a tougher, less honorable decision to murder her to protect the realm.

So much of the writing felt like characters being pulled from one direction into another fate — like the showrunners had the ending from George R.R. Martin‘s outline and had to reverse engineer a couple seasons of TV from it. It’s probably true, but we shouldn’t feel so aware of it…

POSITIVES

Sansa becoming Queen in the North was possibly the most deserved fate of any character in the history of TV. After all the abuse she faced, to come out the other side strong as iron — now that’s a story.

Arya, her heart finally unclouded by revenge, decides to put her skills to use as an explorer. It would have been tempting to have her accept Gendry’s proposal and become a lady, but the writers remembered that wasn’t her. She may be done with avenging — but not with adventuring.

Jon never wanted to rule. He finally got to let his hair down and travel back to the real North. It was supposed to be his punishment, but it seemed to us it’s what he wanted anyway. Why else would he have sent his beloved doggo Ghost up there — it’s the life he would have preferred but wasn’t allowed. And the visual of him using his Night’s Watch position to escort the Free Folk home, to bring life back to the frontier? And mirroring the first shot of the series, riding out from the wall into the wilderness? Beautiful.

We also didn’t hate the rather happy endings for noble side characters like Brienne, Davos, Bronn, and Podrick.

The music, costumes, production design, and acting were top notch ACROSS THE BOARD. And we have to pay the highest compliments to Emilia Clarke and Peter Dinklage, whose names may as well be engraved on all the award statues now.

OK, so with a night to sleep on it and time to reflect, what do YOU think??
