Viewers slam NRL grand final entertainment and Tina Turner tribute

Viewers slam NRL grand final entertainment with ‘knock off’ Tina Turner as ‘something you’d see at Rooty Hill RSL’: ‘That’s embarrassing!’

Sunday night’s NRL grand final entertainment caused a stir on social media.

The cast of the Tina, the Tina Turner Musical, led by singer and actress Ruva Ngwenya, took the stage to perform a spirited medley of the late American superstar’s biggest hits.

But many watching were unimpressed, with several viewers comparing the cover act to something you’d see at a local RSL and mocking the act with hilarious memes.

‘Looks like the NRL got their entertainment from the Rooty Hill RSL,’ wrote one person on X, formerly known as Twitter.

‘This Tina Turner impersonator is something you’d see at the Rooty Hill RSL with a free standard drink coupon. F***ing tragic,’ said another.

‘RSL entertainment. Can’t wait for next year,’ someone else watching at home agreed.

‘How can you have a tribute band as your headline entertainment for a grand final. F**k me that’s embarrassing,’ one more posted.

‘That performance would of killed Tina if she was alive,’ said someone else with another adding, ‘Tina is rolling in her grave’.

‘Worst Tina Turner tribute I’ve seen,’ chimed in someone else – but not everyone was displeased, with many praising the show.

‘The @NRL killing it again with the pre game entertainment,’ wrote one impressed person.

‘Totally get people’s initial hesitancies having a musical as our opening act but this lady is INCREDIBLEEEE!!! Really is fitting as a tribute to Tina this year,’ said another.

’30 years ago I went to my first rugby league grand final, dad got given two tickets and I went along with my grandma,’ recalled someone else.

‘Tina Turner absolutely stole the day, I think it’s a testament to what this game is to have this year’s entertainment as a tribute to Tina Turner’.

There was criticism for the night’s earlier act, King Stingray, too, with viewers wondering if the ARIA award winning band had audio issues after key lyrics were missed.

The group did a cover of the Aussie classic Down Under by Men At Work, but repeatedly skipped the line, ‘you better run, you better take cover’.

‘Terrible audio again for King Stingray. Not good’ said one person while another asked, ‘Did King Stingray forget the words?’

‘King Stingray… bloody terrible! How to butcher an Aussie iconic song’ wrote someone else.

‘King Stingray epic fail. Someone tell old mate in the red to put the mic to his mouth, not his ribs. Seriously was that a wind up?’ yet one more posted.

‘That was shambolic’ complained someone else, with one viewer saying, ‘Perhaps King Stingray should practice more.’

One more added,  ‘What a hatchet job by King Stingray. Woeful’ and compared the performance to Meat Loaf at the 2011 AFL Grand Final, which was widely panned.

Several people wondered why the band, who have their own hits, did a cover song.

‘Terrible audio again for King Stingray. Not good’ said one person while another asked, ‘Did King Stingray forget the words?’ But others loved it

‘Can’t even let King Stingray sing their own gear’ said one person and another agreed, ‘Poor King Stingray, they didn’t get to sing their songs’.

‘So many brilliant King Stingray songs and we only get a cover of Down Under?’ someone wrote.

But there was plenty of praise for the band, too, with one person saying,  ‘King Stingray are too good. Great performance from a great band’.

Someone else agreed, ‘How amazing was King Stingray performing for the NRL grand final. Love it!’

‘King Stingray doing Land Downunder. I’m crying’ someone else chimed in.
