Virgil van Dijk has weighed in on Sergio Ramos’ feud with Liverpool teammate Dejan Lovren.
Ramos has emerged as something of a hate figure for Liverpool fans following his challenge on Mohamed Salah in last season’s Champions League final.
His apparent spat with Lovren has developed in the months since, with the Liverpool defender suggesting Ramos was made to look good by teammate Raphael Varane.
Ramos refused to hit back before Spain’s defeat to Croatia this week but Lovren taunted him again after the match on social media.
Van Dijk has now had his say on the Spain skipper and while he insists Ramos is a top player, he also believes Varane is the key component in the Real defence.
"He is a great player and I respect what he has achieved but he is not the best, he is not my type of central defender," Van Dijk told De Telegraaf.
"Ramos’ teammate at Real Madrid , Raphael Varane is my favourite. He is an excellent defender and has already won a lot."
Van Dijk went on to suggest Real ganged up on young Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold after Salah was taken off in the Kiev final with a shoulder problem.
"I do not know if it was deliberate but mentally something changed when Salah came off," Van Dijk added.
"Suddenly, Marcelo, Benzema and Ronaldo all appeared at Trent and released the entire right side. With Salah they never dared to do that.
Asked if Liverpool would have won the final with Salah, the Dutchman said: "The match could have been different.
"I sometimes think about the match but I hope to be in the final again and on the right side of the score."
