TV chef Gary Rhodes dies aged 59 in Dubai with wife Jennie by his side

Gary Rhodes has died at the age of 59.

The TV chef was in Dubai with his wife Jennie at his bedside when he died on Tuesday evening November 26.

Gary was working until the day he died.

He was famed for fronting shows MasterChef, MasterChef USA, Hell's Kitchen and Rhodes Around Britain throughout his career spanning 30 years.

As well as his impressive array of cuisine, the star was recognised for his trademark spiky hairdo.

Gary left behind his devastated family who broke the news of his death.

A statement released by the family read: "The Rhodes family are deeply saddened to announce the passing of beloved husband, father and brother, Gary Rhodes OBE.

"Gary passed away last evening at the age of 59, with his beloved wife Jennie by his side.

"The family would like to thank everyone for their support and ask for privacy during this time."

The cause of his death is not known.

The TV chef has left behind his wife Jennie as well as their two children Samuel and George.

Gary was a devoted father as well as a hard working chef.

Jaideep Bhatia, PR director of the Grosvenor House Dubai, told the PA news agency Mr Rhodes was working "until the day he died".

He said: "He arrived in Dubai in 2007 and had two restaurants, Rhodes 2010 at Le Royal Meridien Beach Resort and Spa, and Rhodes W1 at the Grosvenor.

"He was working until the day he died. He was working until Tuesday."

Mr Bhatia said he was unable to confirm any further details about Mr Rhodes' death, as everything else had to come "from the family".

Gary was a leading chef with four of his own restaurants. Two of his restaurants – the House Dubai and Le Royal Meridien Beach Resort and Spa – were in Dubai.

A statement from the hotel where he worked in Dubai said: "The team at Grosvenor House Dubai and Le Royal Meridien Beach Resort and Spa are devastated to hear of the tragic passing of Chef Gary Rhodes OBE.

"Not only has the industry lost a true culinary legend, we have also lost an inspirational human being and a very dear friend. 

"No words can express our sadness at Gary’s death or our gratitude for the opportunity to work with him. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Rhodes family."

Born in south London in 1960, Gary moved with his family to Dubai in 2011 where he later set up two of his restaurants.


The dad-of-two carved a place for himself in the cooking worlds earning himself a record five Michelin stars spanning his career.

His first head chef job at the Castle Hotel in Somerset launched his stellar career. It was here where he achieved his first Michelin star at the age of 26.

The chef begun to get the attention of the spotlight when he landed a guest slot on BBC cookery show Hot Chefs.

On the back of his success, he got his own show Rhodes around Britain.

Gary has cooked up a storm for royalty and prime ministers throughout his flourishing career.
