This Spice Girls reunion isn’t for me – it only works when all of them are there

I love the Spice Girls .

Not just in a “dance if Wannabe comes on when I’m drunk” way – in a proper, devoted “cried when Geri left/know the words to album tracks” way.

So the news they’re reuniting for a six stadium tour from June 1 next year, taking in Manchester, Coventry, Sunderland, Edinburgh, Bristol and London’s Wembley should be the most joyful, exciting ever, right?

After all 2019 marks 25 years since they formed, a decade since they last toured together and they’ve not performed together since the London Olympics closing ceremony in 2012. But ‘fraid not.

Sorry, but I’m a purist. What I want, what I really, really want, is a reunion tour with all five members or no reunion tour at all, thanks.

Maybe it seems like I’m being ungrateful, because any Spice is better than no Spice at all.

But I can’t lie to myself. Speaking as someone who was front row the last time they toured together in 2007, the facts are the facts.

The magic only happens when all of them are there.

Any less than five Spice Girls, and it feels like someone is missing… because someone is missing. See: when they tried to carry on without Geri. All or nothing. The end.

Just watching Mel B, Mel C, Geri Horner and Emma Bunton announcing the tour in a mock news broadcast, it was all too obvious there was a Posh Space.

Easy V doesn’t come for free, but they should have either tried harder to persuade her, or shelved this plan.

Because the Mels, Emma and Geri must be well aware that an incomplete set is pretty much a waste of time.

Aren’t we lucky that they’re going to pretend not to be though – you know, for the cash fans?

For those of you who say you’ll be there, tickets go on sale at 10.30am on Saturday at ticketmaster.co.uk and gigsandtours.com
