Dating Around is a Netflix dating show that’s definitely worth your time. The reality series was released on February 14, 2020 (yes, Valentine’s Day) and followed six singles as they embarked on five blind dates. According to executive producer Chris Culvenor, the main aim of the show is to “an honest glimpse of what it’s like to be single in a world of infinite apps and infinite choices” (via Vulture). And if you’ve watched the show, you’ll probably agree that it’s one of the most realistic reality dating TV shows you’ve ever seen.
Dating Around places a significant focus on diversity. It’s not your typical young cast — the six subjects in Season 1 are all of different ages, cultures, and sexual orientations. As showrunner Alycia Rossiter told Vulture, “we had to go find people because they didn’t answer the ads. They didn’t put themselves in the box that you tick for a dating show.”
Each subject on Dating Around has five dates, which are filmed over five days
In terms of filming the series, each subject was filmed going to five dates over five days. As Lex Liang from episode three in season one of Dating Around explained to TIME, “we would shoot for eight to 10 hours, from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. I would meet somebody for like an hour and we would do drinks and then they would reset. We would go away and take a break or the bartender would bring me another cocktail.”
Despite rumours that almost all reality dating shows are scripted, Liang claims Dating Around is relatively unscripted. “It wasn’t scripted or specifically directed,” he told TIME, however, he revealed that the producers did step in from time to time to steer the conversation slightly if things weren’t going really going anywhere, which is to be expected.
According to Refinery29, Season 2 of Dating Around is set to be released later in 2020.
