Viewers have been kept on tenterhooks about the identity of Elena Alves’ killer throughout six-part HBO drama, The Undoing.

And when the limited series finale aired in the US on Sunday evening, it was finally revealed to fans who murdered Elena (Matilda De Angelis), after Jonathan Fraser (Hugh Grant) was arrested for her murder during episode two.

In what some Twitter users described as a ‘not-so-shocking twist’, Jonathan is unmasked as the killer, despite mounting evidence in previous episodes that someone had framed him.

While the ending felt obvious to some viewers, others reacted with just as much disbelief as Jonathan’s wife Grace Fraser (Nicole Kidman).

Among those sounding off on social media was actress and talk show host Kelly Ripa, who declared that she was ‘shooketh’ in a series of live photos detailing her utter surprise on her Instagram story.

Fellow actress Kerry Washington echoed that sentiment, writing: ‘I am undone.’

It’s time! As The Undoing season finale aired in the US on Sunday evening, it was finally revealed to fans who killed Elena Alves, after Jonathan Fraser (Hugh Grant – left) was arrested for her murder during episode two. While the ending felt obvious to some viewers, others reacted with just as much disbelief as Jonathan’s wife Grace Fraser (Nicole Kidman – right)

Whodunnit? Throughout the series many claimed it would be ‘too obvious’ for Jonathan to be the one who killed Elena Alves (Matilda De Angelis – pictured) and spent time theorizing about who else may have committed the crime

Where’s the twist? Some viewers reacting on Twitter felt that the finale wasn’t very shocking

Bravo: Other viewers were delighted by the ending and praised Hugh Grant’s acting chops

A major cliffhanger at the end of episode five left viewers once again questioning the culprit, after Grace discovered a mallet – the potential murder weapon – hidden in a violin case in her son Henry’s bedroom.

And episode six kicks off where five left off, as Grace and Henry (Noah Jupe) stare at each other intently as they realize the gravity of what she has discovered.

Henry confesses that he discovered the weapon in an outdoor fireplace at the Fraser family beach house, which was still bloodied, so he decided to run it through their dishwasher (twice!) to clean it off.

The sweet child admits he was only trying to cover for his father, who he is convinced killed Elena, he tells his shocked mother.

As the episode continues, all the signs point to Jonathan as he admits on the stand that he took his tuxedo from the night in question to the dry cleaners, while making his way to the beach house to see his wife and child.

A shocking flashback from the night of the murder shows his white blood-spattered shirt, however it is still unconfirmed who the killer is at this point.

When Grace confronts her husband over Henry’s claims, he suggests that the weapon was planted by the police in order to frame him, and then appallingly even accuses his own 12-year-old son Henry of being the killer.

This appears to be the straw that breaks the camel’s back for Grace, who finally accepts what was been staring her in the face all along. Her husband Jonathan is Elena’s killer.

Grace reverses her decision to not testify in Jonathan’s murder trial, and offers snippets of information that help the prosecution nail down her husband.

She tells the jury of how Jonathan felt no ‘guilt or grief’ when his younger sister ran out into the road and was killed by a car while in his case. Grace had earlier learned this information from Jonathan’s mother, who also labeled her own son a sociopath.

Further flashbacks take the viewers back to the night where Jonathan visited Elena at her studio on the night of the school auction as they made love.

Things turned nasty between the couple as Jonathan warned Elena to stay away from his family, while Elena insisted that he would never be able to leave her.

Jonathan then banged her head against a wall before trying to leave, but as she launched herself at him with a mallet he stopped her, threw her down and bludgeoned her to death.

On the day Jonathan is set to be convicted, he tells his son that he wants to take him out for breakfast but instead tries to go on the run.

While in the car Henry says: ‘You murdered someone’, while Jonathan insists: ‘Not the real me. Not the dad you know.’

He continues to drive on at dangerous  high-speed and narrowly avoids smashing into another vehicle after clearing a red light.

Jonathan eventually comes to a stop on a bridge where he threatens to jump off, while his son begs him not to jump, as Grace who has been following in hot pursuit sprints towards her son.

Grace manages to safely retrieve Henry and leads him to her father’s helicopter as they fly off as Jonathan is hand cuffed.
