The Thanksgiving Text movie is happening at Netflix

The story of a grandmother who accidentally invited a teenager to Thanksgiving is turning into a Netflix movie dubbed The Thanksgiving Text

The heartwarming tale of an Arizona grandmother who accidentally invited a teenager to Thanksgiving is now being turned into a Netflix movie.

Back in 2016, Wanda Dench sent a text to who she thought was her grandson, but was really a high school senior named Jamal Hinton.

After a humorous text exchange, he asked if he could ‘still get a plate,’ which started a Thanksgiving tradition that entered its sixth year a few weeks ago.

Hinton posted the initial text exchange on Twitter back in November 2016, which read, ‘Thanksgiving dinner is at my house on Nov. 24 at 3:00 PM. Let me know if you’re coming. Hope to see you all. Of course that includes Amanda & Justin.’

A confused Hinton wrote back, ‘Who is those..’ and Dench replied, ‘Your grandma.’ He wrote back, ‘Grandma? Can I have a picture?’

She sent a photo back of her at work, when Hinton texted a photo of himself back, adding, ‘You not my grandma. Can I still get a plate tho?’

Dench responded, ‘Of course you can. That’s what grandma’s do… feed every one,’ which started a Thanksgiving tradition.

The exchange went viral and Hinton has spent Thanksgiving with Dench and her family for the past six years in a row now, including their celebration a few weeks back.

Dench shared photos of him and his girlfriend Mikaela at the celebration this year and last year, which was bittersweet since Dench lost her husband of 42 years, Lonnie, to COVID-19 in April 2020.

‘We are excited to share our story with the world. We hope it inspires more people to reach out and make connections that they wouldn’t ordinarily make,” Dench and Hinton said in a joint statement.

‘We are so blessed to find a genuine friendship brought together by God from a mistaken text message,’ the statement concluded.

Abdul Williams (Lottery Ticket, Salt-N-Pepa) has been set to write the screenplay, though no director or cast has been set at this time.
