The one player Arsene Wenger wishes he had signed for Arsenal

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy believes Arsene Wenger would have loved to have signed Lucas Torreira when he was Arsenal boss.

The Uruguayan, who joined the club for £25million in the summer, has now established himself as a regular starter under Unai Emery.

The 22-year-old played in the 1-1 draw with Liverpool on Saturday and put in yet another impressive display.

Murphy reckons Torreira is exactly the type of player who could have helped fill the gaps left by Patrick Vieira and Gilberto Silva.

"I like Lucas Torreira in midfield," wrote Murphy in the Mail on Sunday . "Playing the holding role is not just about getting the tackles in, when you’re on the ball, it helps to have good feet and composure to springboard the attacks.

"I’m sure Arsene Wenger would love to have had someone like him at the latter end of his Arsenal career to follow Patrick Vieira and Gilberto Silva.

"I am sure Wenger was aware how important the position has become in the modern game, it’s just that his latter signings to play there weren’t as good as Torreira."
