The Muffs lead singer and bassist Kim Shattuck dies aged 56

Kim Shattuck, who was the lead singer and bassist in The Muffs, has died following a two-year battle with ALS.

Kim was aged 56.

Her husband broke the news on social media and Shattuck's former bandmate, Melanie Vammen, has said: "My heart is forever broken."

The Muffs' Ronnie Barnett and Roy McDonald released a statement following the sad news, which said: "We are very sorry to announce the passing of our bandmate and dear friend Kim Shattuck.

"Besides being a brilliant songwriter, rocking guitarist and singer/screamer extraordinaire, Kim was a true force of nature. While battling ALS Kim produced our last album, overseeing every part of the record from tracking to artwork.

"She was our best friend and playing her songs was an honour. Goodbye Kimba. We love you more than we could ever say.”

The Muffs were due to release their next album, No Holiday, on October 18.

Shattuck was a long time collaborator with Vammen and they were members together on the Pandoras in the 80s.

In 1991, they started The Muffs as a punk band, who will most likely be remembered for their cover of Kim Wilde's Kids in America, which appeared on the soundtracl for 1995 movie, Clueless.

The Muffs released four albums before going on a hiatus, which saw Shattuck then collaborate with other bands, including NOFX.

She then replaced Kim Deal in Pixies, when they went on tour before returning to the Muffs in 2014 for a new album release.

Speaking about ALS, Shattuck said: “Sadly, it runs in my damn family, and that disease is a mystery to just about every scientist."
