The nominations for the 91st Academy Awards have been released, with a host of Brits taking the lead in some of the most prestigious categories – with The Favourite and Bohemian Rhapsody sweeping the board.

Olivia Colman has been given a nod in the Best Actress category for her role in The Favourite while her co-star Rachel Weisz is being recognised for her role as Supporting Actress in the esteemed movie, which is up for Best Picture alongside Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody.

A shocker is the absence of Emily Blunt, who has been lauded for her role in Mary Poppins Returns, yet missed out on a Best Actress nod just weeks after losing out on a nomination in the Leading Actress category at the BAFTAs.

She’s a winner! The nominations for the 91st Academy Awards have been released, with a host of Brits taking the lead in some of the most prestigious categories – with The Favourite and Bohemian Rhapsody sweeping the board

The nominations were announced on Tuesday morning in Los Angeles, with superstars and superheroes leading the list of nominees. Roma led the pack with 10 nominations, including four nods for director and writer Alfanso Cuaron, tying with The Favourite.

The Favourite frontwoman Olivia’s critically-acclaimed film was released last month and follows the love triangle Queen Anne forms with two of her female courtiers, played by Emma and Rachel.

Speaking last month, Olivia confessed she would love to win a gong but was insistent she would not get caught up in award fever, as she said: ‘If I’m really honest, I’ve always dreamed of holding an Oscar…

‘But I’m really trying to sort of keep everything in check, keep calm. This is silly. What are the chances? I don’t want to get excited. I don’t want to face that disappointment. I just want to be on an even keel. I’m a mum, a wife, I’m a mate. I’m other things. You can see how people get sort of swept into it and I want to stay sane.”

Supportive star: Having won an Oscar 13 years ago, Rachel Weisz is now up for the same category

Hurrah! British hit Bohemian Rhapsody has been nominated for Best Picture at the prestigious awards

In 2015, Emma was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Birdman, before she walked away victorious with the Best Actress gong for La La Land in 2017.  Rachel meanwhile won Best Supporting Actress for her role in 2006’s The Constant Gardener,

Rachel previously discussed how winning her first Oscar had changed her life, saying: ‘Immediately afterward, I was offered jobs by interesting directors, including Alejandro Amenábar. Peter Jackson offered me a role…

‘I didn’t have to meet people. They just offered me jobs, these big fancy directors. People believe in you more after you’ve won an Oscar, but it’s up to you what choices you make and how that goes.’

Lady Gaga grabbed two nominations, and will take on six-time nominee Glenn Close as both women hope to walk home with their first Oscar when the winners are announced on February 24 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.

Nowhere to be seen? A shocker is the absence of Emily Blunt, who has been lauded for her role in Mary Poppins Returns, yet missed out on a Best Actress nod just weeks after losing out on a nomination in the Leading Actress category at the BAFTAs

The film also earned an acting nod for star Bradley Cooper, who was not nominated for Best Director. And for the first time in history, a superhero film is up for Best Picture.

Black Panther picked up eight nominations overall, and will battle with Star, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite, Green Book, BlacKkKlansman, Roma, If Beale Street Could Talk, Mary Poppins Returns and Crazy Rich Asians.

The Supporting Actor category will pit the men who won the award in the same category the past two years against one another, as Mahershala Ali (Green Book) and Sam Rockwell (Vice) take on Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), Sam Elliott (A Star Is Born) and Adam Driver (BlacKkKlansman).

It was big morning for Roma star Marina de Taviras, who was a surprise addition to the Best Supporting Actress lineup, joining Sapphic foes Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz (The Favourite), six-time nominee Amy Adams (Vice) and frontrunner Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk).
