The Cranberries Singer Dolores O’Riordan Accidentally Drowned After Drinking: Coroner’s Report

Dolores O’Riordan, the iconic singer for The Cranberries who passed away in a London hotel back on January 15, accidentally drowned in a bathtub after consuming alcohol, according to a coroner’s inquest.

The report was concluded and released on Thursday after months of investigation into what had caused the death of O’Riordan, who was just 46 years old at the time.

Originally having suspected a suicide, police investigated further because O’Riordan didn’t leave a note, and there was no evidence of any self-harm done prior to death.

But after months of looking at the facts, the coroner’s inquest has determined what they believe to have happened: an accidental death.

According to the report, five miniature alcohol bottles and one bottle of champagne were found in O’Riordan’s room; toxicology tests revealed that the singer had a blood-alcohol level more than four times the legal limit for driving, as well.

It’s a horribly tragic end to what had been a truly iconic career for O’Riordan; as the lead singer of The Cranberries, she and the group enjoyed massive international success in the 1990s with hit songs like DreamLinger, and Zombie.

Upon her death in January, Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar even called her “the voice of a generation,” acknowledging her and the group’s incredible influence during that decade.

And still at 46, O’Riordan had more to do; at the time of her death, she was in London specifically to work on recording new music.

So sad.
