Strictly’s Amy Dowden has ‘backstage meltdown and is utterly devastated’ after shock dance off with Karim Zeroual

Amy Dowden reportedly had a backstage meltdown after she and Karim Zeroual found themselves in the bottom two on Strictly Come Dancing on Sunday. 

The pair survived the dance-off after impressing the judges with their Contemporary Couples Choice, meaning AJ Pritchard and YouTuber Saffron Barker were sent home.

After the vote was cast however, Amy, 28, reportedly burst into tears backstage and had to be consoled by the CBBC presenter, 26, and fellow dancer Neil Jones.

A source told The Mirror: ‘Amy was utterly devastated they were in the dance-off, Karim had to reassure her and was rubbing her back while they were waiting to perform.   

‘After they were voted through and the cameras were off them, Amy burst into tears and was comforted by fellow pro dancer Neil Jones, who kept telling her “It’s not your fault”. 

‘She seemed to be blaming herself a lot for the situation they were in,  a lot of the celebs and pros looked very shocked that Karim and Amy were in the bottom two.’

MailOnline has contacted Strictly’s representatives for further comment.  

Karim and Amy were saved after a unanimous vote from the judges to eliminate Saffron and AJ. 

Craig said: ‘Tonight was easy for me, the best dance tonight was Amy and Karim.’ 

Motsi added: ‘One couple left me no choice, it was a perfect performance and I’m going to save Karim and Amy.’

Bruno enthused: ‘I want to keep the couple that has proven to be the strongest both technically and artistically.’ 

After the results show aired, an emotional Amy took to Instagram. Sharing a backstage picture, she wrote: ‘Emotional weekend for myself and lovely partner @karim__zeroual. Karim you couldn’t have done anymore, you were YOU on that floor and I’m so proud. 

‘We challenged ourselves and pushed our limits this past week and I loved every second of it and again want to thank the creative and talented @lukas_mcfarlane and @amytomtom.

‘Being in a dance off is so tough and I’m so proud of your focus and emotional but determined performance. Thank you to the judges for saving us, we are so grateful to be back performing In the quarter final.

‘Musical special next weekend. It’s so bitter sweet, so sorry to see the beautiful @saffronbarker and @aj11ace leave the competition tonight. You guys brought so much fun and energy to the competition.’ 

Saffron told Tess her Strictly experience had been ‘amazing’, moments before walking off the dance floor for the final time. 

The remaining five couples will take to the dancefloor next week when Strictly Come Dancing returns for the musical special on Saturday 30 November.
