Strictly Come Dancing: Max George becomes the third celebrity to be eliminated from the show after going up against Maisie Smith in the dreaded dance-off

Max George has become the third celebrity to be eliminated from Strictly Come Dancing during Sunday’s results show.

The Wanted singer, 32, and his dance partner Dianne Buswell went up against Maisie Smith and her pro Gorka Marquez in the dance off.

While they received a modest score of 20 after their American Smooth to It Had To Be You by Harry Connick Jr, Max and Dianne’s efforts were not enough to impress judges Craig Revel Horwood and stand-in Anton du Beke.

After seeing the two celebrities perform again on the ballroom floor, the judges decided that Maisie’s Cha-Cha-Cha to Girls Just Wanna Have Fun by Cyndi Lauper was enough to save her.

It must have come as quite a shock to Maisie to be in the dreaded dance off, after she scored 24 points which put her in the middle of the pack. The scores were also combined with the public’s vote.

Craig and Anton -who is standing in for regular judge Motsi Mabuse while she self-isolates in Germany- decided to save Maisie and Gorka, while head judge Shirley revealed she would have chosen Max and Dianne.

Tough decision: Craig and Anton decided to save Maisie and Gorka, while head judge Shirley revealed she would have chosen Max and Dianne had the vote come down to her

Explaining his decision, Craig said: ‘Both couples were more concentrated and both couples took the notes we had given them and showed improvement. But the couple I’d like to save, Maisie and Gorka.’

Anton agreed, as he explained: ‘Well, I have to say it’s so close. They were both immaculate through that dance. It literally was just the smallest timing. For me, I’m going to have to save Maisie and Gorka.’

While he was no doubt disappointed with the decision, Max gushed about Dianne’s ‘amazing’ work with him over the last few weeks.

After Tess Daly asked him about his time on the show, he said: ‘I’ve loved it. It’s all down to Dianne, she’s been literally amazing.

For me to get through 90 seconds of a dance for four weeks now is a credit to her, she’s just unbelievable. I’ve got to say, all these guys over here are the nicest group of people ever. I love you all!’

Dianne also shared praise about Max, as she said he did ‘an absolutely amazing job’ with her on the programme.

He has done four incredible dances and I know how nervous you get, but you’ve come out here very week,’ she explained.

‘I know you always say you want to do me proud and oh my goodness you’ve done me more than proud – so well done. I also want to say thank you to the judges, Anton you were incredible tonight. Thank you so much.’

Elsewhere on the results show, The Vamps gave a stellar performance for viewers at home.
