Sofia Richie parades her toned abs in a black sequinned bralet as she leads the star-studded arrivals for the Venice Film Festival opening gala

  • The 76th Venice Film Festival is taking place from 28th August to 7th September
  • The gala also saw the premiere of The Truth, directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda and starring Catherine Deneuve and Juliette Binoche

Sofia Richie was leading the glamour on Wednesday night, as the 76th Venice Film Festival began with the premiere of Hirokazu Kore-eda’s The Truth.

The model, 21, flashed her toned abs in a grey sequinned bralet as she walked the red carpet in Italy for the opening gala of the 10-day festival.

Sofia’s appearance comes after she was gifted with a $250,000 Aston Martin by her boyfriend Scott Disick, 36, as she celebrated her 21st birthday in style.

Sofia ensured that every inch of her tanned pins was on full display as she walked the red carpet for the premiere of The Truth.

The daughter of singer Lionel Richie paraded her toned abs in the revealing bralet, teamed with an a-line skirt that displayed every inch of her pins.

Pulling her blonde tresses into a curled topknot, Sofia ensured that all eyes were on her as she finished the look with a delicate silver necklace and matching drop earrings.

Sofia’s appearance comes after she celebrated her 21st birthday in lavish style, including a surprise gift from her boyfriend Scott. 

The Keeping Up With The Kardashians star gifted her with a customised Aston Martin DB11 which costs upwards of $250,000.   

Sofia and Scott have been going strong since September 2017 despite their 15 year age-gap. The businessman and his ex Kourtney Kardashian split up for good after more than ten years together in 2017, but they ‘co-parent’ their children Mason, nine, Penelope, seven, and Reign, four.

As ever a slew of glamorous models put on their best gowns to walk the red carpet at the film launch, with Candice Swanepoel, 30, being just one of them.

The South African model oozed Old Hollywood glamour in a fitted strapless gown with a delicate sheen and a thigh-high split. 

Elsa Hosk, 30, also commanded attention in a black fitted gown with amazing cut-out detailing, and pulled her blonde tresses into a sleek up-do.

Barbara Palvin, 25, opted for a classic strapless black gown with a revealing leg split and ruffled detailing and her brunette tresses styled into classic Old Hollywood curls.



Gothic glamour: Martha Hunt, 30, was every inch the vixen in a beautiful black gown with a dramatic ruffled detailing on the bodice to give the illusion of a gothic flower

Daring: The American beauty sported a deep red lip with her all-black ensemble as she sported the daring gown on the red carpet


Pop of colour: Gabrielle Caunesil opted for a bright pink strapless gown with an enormous skirt and sprinkled with a rainbow of sequins

And Martha Hunt, 30, was every inch the vixen in a beautiful black gown with a dramatic ruffled detailing on the bodice to give the illusion of a gothic flower. 

Also among the stars in attendance was singer Mel B who oozed Old Hollywood glamour in a leopard print silver floor length gown.

The singer, 44, looked sensational in the simple but sophisticated gown and hoop earrings as she kept her dark cropped tresses in a slicked-back style.

Drama: The Truth Starring tells the story of French film star Fabienne, and the problematic relationship she has with her daughter Lumir


Superstar: Juliette Binoche – who stars in Truth – also made a glamorous entrance in a pretty pale pink gown with a quirky mesh overlay, and her dark tresses styled into wet curls

Best friends: The star was reunited with Catherine Deneuve at the event, after they appeared in the French drama about a film star and her relationship with her daughter

Sartorial chic: Catherine, 75, showcased her ageless beauty at the red carpet in an orange full-length waistcoat with feathered detailing

The 76th Venice Film Festival sees a highly anticipated lineup compete for the coveted Golden Lion award, with many big Hollywood pictures making their premiere at the annual showcase. 

Opening the showcase is The Truth, which is the first of Hirokazu Kore-eda’s films to be directed outside of his native Japan.

Starring Catherine Deneuve and Juliette Binoche, it tells the story of French film star Fabienne, and the problematic relationship she has with her daughter Lumir. 


Eye-catching: Iman added an amazing splash of colour to proceedings as she arrived in an oversized blue floral shawl with a feathered trim and emblazoned with an enormous white bird



Dramatic: Festival hostess Alessandra Mastronardi ensured that all eyes were on her as she walked the red carpet in a plunging black gown with white floral detailing


Romantic: The Italian actress arrived with her partner Ross McCall and the couple certainly made for a picture-perfect pair as they held hands on the red carpet



Wow! Brazilian model Isabeli Fontana left little to the imagination as she arrived in a mustard yellow creation consisting of a bandeau top attached to a one-sided skirt with an endless train, that flashed her toned stomach and endless pins

Leading the so-called Hollywood contenders at Venice is the much-anticipated Joker, directed by The Hangover’s Todd Phillips, and sees the acclaimed Joaquin Phoenix play the iconic DC villain in a realistic take on his origin story.

Set in the 1980s, the film has already sparked awards buzz for Phoenix’s performance, as the film tells the story of Arthur Fleck, a man so down on his luck he becomes a murderous psychopath hellbent on causing havoc in Gotham. 

Another film boosted by Hollywood star power is Ad Astra, which stars Brad Pitt as an astronaut who journeys into space to find his lost father, played by Tommy Lee Jones.

The film is directed by James Gray, who has competed for the Palm d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival on several occasions, including his 2013 film The Immigrant.

Smiling: Actress Kat Graham was a ray of sunshine in a banana yellow gown with a ruched bodice and lace underlay


Playful: Jasmine Sanders embraced her nickname as the Golden Barbie in a fun baby blue dress with a puffball skirt and black strapped heels

Suave: Nicholas Hoult put on a dapper display in a classic black tuxedo as he made his way along the red carpet



Star-studded: Alberta Ferretti (far left), Isabella Ferrari, and Nicole Warne were also in attendance for the star-studded film premiere

The Laundromat – directed by Steven Soderbergh and the first of Netflix’s Venice contenders – also makes its debut, starring Meryl Streep, Gary Oldman and Antonio Banderas, and recalls the infamous Panama Papers scandal. 

Marriage Story – which stars Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver – will also compete for the Golden Lion, and tells the story of a couples’ gruelling divorce. The film is also being distributed by Netflix.

Competing out of competition is the Shakespeare adaptation and Netflix release The King, directed by David Michôd and starring Call Me By Your Name favourite Timothée Chalamet as King Henry V. 

The jury will be led by Argentinian director Lucrecia Martel, and also features Canadian critic Piers Handling, Japanese actor Shinya Tsukamoto and British actress Stacy Martin, who landed her breakout role in 2013 as the younger version of sex addict Joe in the Lars Von Trier erotic drama Nyphomaniac.

Fun: The red carpet premiere also saw the debut of an incredible Lamborghini police car, as the authorities were out in force for the festival

Head-turning: The vehicle made for an eye-popping sight as it drove around the streets of Venice on the opening day of the festival
