Shirley Ballas, 61, has revealed that she was told by her son to “drop the walls” whilst judging on Strictly Come Dancing. The former dancer has been head judge since Led Goodman’s departure in 2017.

They see right through it.

Shirley herself specialises in International Latin Dance and has won several dancing championships.

The head judge’s impressive dancing background however has not stopped her being “guarded”.

Speaking to Prima, Shirley said when asked about her role in the BBC favourite: “I’m learning to be myself more on the show.

“That’s something my son Mark said to me, ‘I need to drop the walls because people can spot it when you’re being guarded’.

“They see right through it, so I might as well be the real me.”

Shirley has been very open recently about her history with cosmetic surgery, due to insecurities with her body image.

Speaking on the BBC’s new programme Womanhood, she penned: “As an older lady, shall we say, I had body image problems.

“And I did things like Lipo-Light because they told me I could get this thing in my arm that would burn off the fat.

“And it would do all these things, and I had new teeth and I had boobs.”

She added: “I had a boob job because I thought it would make my husband think I was far more appealing.”

Away from Strictly, Shirley has been very open with her followers about her recent health scares.

She alarmed viewers of the show in September when they spotted a lump under her arm.

Shirley thanked viewers and went to the doctor, when she was told she needed further tests due to her hormone levels.

Taking to Instagram last week, she told her followers that she had a shadow on her kidney but had been given the all clear and finally felt like she could now “breathe” after “several weeks” of anxiety.

She continued: “Hi everybody I just wanted to fill you in as promised…

“I got two sets of results back today and the shadow on my kidney seems absolutely fine and some other polyps are absolutely fine. No cancer there so that’s good.”

“Now I need to have my boobies checked one more time when I have a minute.

“My hormones are still all over the place today so starting today with some oestrogen to see if we can balance the body better…” the star added.

Shirley will be on Strictly this weekend as the show heads towards quarter finals week with only five celebrities remaining.

Those remaining are Rhys Stephenson and Nancy Xu, Dan Walker and Nadiya Bychkova, AJ Odudu and Kai Widdrington, Rose Ayling-Ellis and Giovanni Pernice and John Whaite and his dance partner Johannes Radebes.

This comes after Tilly Ramsay and Nikita Kuzmin were eliminated on Sunday evening.

The January issue of Prima is on sale from 2nd December.
