Selena Gomez says Bieber split 'best thing that ever happened to me'

‘It was the best thing that ever happened to me’: Selena Gomez emotionally reflects on ‘worst break-up ever’ with Justin Bieber in harrowing new documentary

Selena Gomez has revealed her 2018 break-up with Justin Bieber was the ‘best thing that ever happened to her’ in her new Apple + documentary, My Mind & Me.

The Wolves hitmaker, 30, who dated the Baby musician, 28, on-off for eight years, said she felt the ‘worst break-up ever’ had to happen so that she could learn to ‘choose herself and choose life again.’

The split provided the inspiration for her hit 2020 song, Lose You to Love Me, with the star saying: ‘Everything was so public. I felt haunted by a past relationship that no one wanted to let go of. Then I just moved past it, and I wasn’t afraid anymore.

‘I feel like I had to go through the worst possible heartbreak ever and then just forgetting everything at the drop of the hand, it was really confusing. But I just think that needed to happen and ultimately it was the best thing that ever happened to me.’

Adding that she had written the song in just 45 minutes, she continued: ‘It’s about more than a lost love. It’s me learning to choose myself, to choose life, but also hoping that people can find grace and peace in that too.

‘The song is about knowing that you completely lost every part of who you are just to rediscover yourself again.

Selena and Justin were teenage sweethearts but had their last breakup in 2018, months before he had a courthouse marriage to Hailey Baldwin.

The month after Justin married Hailey, Selena reportedly suffered a breakdown connected to her lupus and entered treatment for her mental health.

Emotions: The Wolves hitmaker, 30, who dated the Baby musician, 28, on-off for eight years, said she felt the ‘worst break-up ever’ had to happen so that she could learn to ‘choose herself and choose life again’

A day after news broke of Selena’s alleged breakdown, Justin was spotted looking anguished as he sat in his car beside Hailey.

Hailey has received blowback from diehard Selena fans throughout her relationship with Justin, whom she has now been married to for over four years.

When Justin and Hailey attended the Americana-themed Met Gala together in September 2021, onlookers chanted ‘Selena!’ at them.

Hailey’s cousin Ireland claimed that the couple were unfazed by the jeering Selena fans, writing on social media: ‘They’re one of the happiest and most in love couples I’ve ever gotten the chance to be around. They don’t care about them.’

Back in 2020 Justin shared a social media post by a Selena fan who encouraged others to flood Hailey’s livestream with remarks that ‘Jelena was better.’

‘It is extremely hard to choose the high road when I see people like this try and rally to gather people to bully the person I love the most in this world,’ Justin wrote.

Hailey became so exasperated that this April she posted a TikTok begging the trolls who are ‘in my comments every single time I post’ to ‘leave me alone, please.’

Possibly referring to how long ago Justin and Selena broke up, she added: ‘Enough time has gone by where it’s valid to leave me alone. I beg of you, truly.’

However the two women demonstrated with their photo together last month that they themselves are on friendly terms, whatever their respective admirers might think.

Now in a new interview with Vulture, Selena said the snaps were ‘not a big deal’ and added: ‘It’s not even a thing.’

Photographer Tyrell Hampton, who captured one of the images of Hailey and Selena at the gala, posted it to Instagram at the time and wrote: ‘plot twist.’

Hailey had already previously indicated on the Call Her Daddy podcast that her equation with Selena was ‘all respect’ – and during the same interview she staunchly denied that Justin had cheated on Selena with her.
