RuPaul and Solange Knowles are two stunt queens extraordinaire. Last year at the Met Gala, Solange wore a latex cocoon/Mother Theresa get up, and RuPaul is biggest drag queen in the world–so our expectations for seeing these two bring camp to life was pretty high. Well, buckle in for that fall from those bloated expectations, because both Mama Ru and Solange hit us with some pretty normal-looking fashion-fare. Ru didn’t even throw on any drag! Blasphemy!
Instead of strutting down that red carpet looking like a Met Gala pink carpet Glamazon (available on iTunes), RuPaul, who brought his husband Georges, wore a suit. Ru walked down looking like a neon pink zebra grew a parasitic twin in-utero and got turned into a suit for RuPaul in adulthood:
I don’t… hate it? I guess? I mean, that shoulder? It’s definitely a horse girl’s wet dream.
Meanwhile, Drag Queens did hit the Met Gala carpet for the first time in herstory. Rupaul’s Drag Race winners, Violet Chachki who wore a full-on glove by Moschino, and Aquaria who walked the carpet in a John Galliano Maison Margiela look which makes me think of a lace-covered hooker with steel skin who got caught in a garbage disposal, or something.
Meanwhile, Solange also went the RuPaul snooze-worthy route and showed up in a Ferragamo outfit that her sister Beyoncé wouldn’t even let her back-up dancers wear:
Paul Andrew of Ferragamo told Vogue:
“Solange is daring. Daring in her style, beauty, aesthetic and music. We created a look with unexpected materials while paying homage to the ‘camp’ theme through an exaggeration of python skin, and the masculine structure of the jacket cut paired with the femininity of our ‘F wedge’ thigh-high boots.”
Yawn. Maybe if the thigh-high boots were actual snakes and they dragged behind her as she walked with their bejewelled tongues sticking out. This looks like a regular club outfit and not a special one. I mean, I guess she wore it so she can really pop lock and drop it when Thotiana comes on.
