‘Society makes being deaf difficult’: Strictly’s Rose Ayling-Ellis and Giovanni Pernice reflect on their awareness-raising silent dance

Strictly Come Dancing’s Rose Ayling-Ellis and Giovanni Pernice have reflected on the silent moment during their moving routine on the BBC show last weekend.

Joining This Morning hosts Dermot O’Leary and Alison Hammond on the sofa on Friday, EastEnders actress Rose, 27, said ‘it’s society that makes it difficult being deaf’, while Italian dancer Giovanni, 31, said she was ‘100%’ the best dance partner.

Last week’s breathtaking moment saw a ‘silent moment’ incorporated into the couple’s routine, in a bid to give viewers an insight into Rose’s experience being deaf.

Of the stunning segment, which featured during their Couple’s Choice to Symphony by Clean Bandit featuring Zara Larsson, Rose said: ‘I think it was a special moment for me because a lot of the time, you always see a deaf person getting on well and doing what is normal, but you don’t see how much hard work goes behind it.

‘I think the silent moment was to show, “This is what I do when I dance – this is the amount of work I do.”’

Despite budding romance rumours surrounding the pair remaining unaddressed, Giovanni was extremely complimentary of Rose, and said ‘100%’ when Alison asked if she was the best dance partner.

In full, he replied: ‘100 per cent. I’m a professional dancer, I’ve been doing it for 23 years.

Even 10 seconds of silence was so hard because in that 10 seconds, you have to think about your steps and you have to think about keeping the beat – and I was like, “Now I understand what she goes through.”‘

The choreographer added: ‘She’s working harder than anyone else – even more than me sometimes.’

Elsewhere in the interview, Rose detailed how she learns the routines, explaining how it all boils down to the counting, something which Giovanni aids her with.

Secret taps was a technique that didn’t work for them, but the soap star credited her muscle memory.

On an additional poignant note, Giovanni believes that the ‘door will open’ for others since having a role model like Rose on the show.

Rose also told Alison and Dermot: ‘My mum – when she found out I was deaf, she felt so alone. She felt she had no idea about deaf culture and deaf community.

‘It’s society that makes it difficult being deaf…. there’s nothing wrong with being deaf, I have no problem with it.’

Last weekend’s silent moment saw an emotional Anton Du Beke, 55, branding the moment ‘the greatest thing he’s ever seen on the show.’
