Romance Novelist Arrested for Murdering Husband

Nancy Crampton-Brophy is a romance novelist whose novels explore stories of strong women, attractive men, and themes involving families that work and families that do not.

Unfortunately, it appears that things in the Brophy family did not work out at all.

68-year-old Nancy was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly fatally shooting her husband at the Oregon Culinary Institute, where he taught as a chef.

On June 2 of this year, Daniel Brophy passed away in the hospital after medical professionals, like the first responders, were unable to save his life.

A chef, he had been teaching at the Oregon Culinary Institute.

That is also where he was shot on June 2.

And yet it was not until September that police charged the late man’s wife, Nancy.

On Wednesday, she was charged with murder and with unlawful discharge of a firearm.

Daniel and Nancy had been married for 27 years.

Daniel was 63. Nancy is 68.

Nancy is known for her romance novels such as The Wrong Husband, The Girl Most Likely To, and Hell on the Heart.

In the past, Nancy said that she knew that Daniel was the one for her when, while waiting for him in the bath, he told her that he would be along in a moment but was making hors d’oeuvres.

One can only imagine what it was that apparently made her decide that he was no longer the man ofr her.

On June 3, Nancy took to Facebook to share a mournful message to break the news.

“For my facebook friends and family, I have sad news to relate,” her post began.

The sudden death — especially the murder — of a loved one is rarely news that one breaks over social media, but it happens, especially when one has many acquaintances.

Nancy broke the grim tidings: “My husband and best friend, Chef Dan Brophy was killed yesterday morning.”

Heartbreaking — a heartbreak that must have been compounded when her friends and family heard that the police believe that she was the culprit.

Nancy’s post, whether expressing genuine grief or crafted to deflect suspicion or even a little bit of both, continues.

“For those of you who are close to me and feel this deserved a phone call, you are right,” she admitted.

Like we said, sometimes people do break hard news over social media. (Many of us have had to do this — it’s hard, but easier than making all of those phone calls)

“But,” Nancy explained. “I’m struggling to make sense of everything right now.”

That line is almost certainly true — even if she really did murder him. Even killers can be in shock.

“While I appreciate all of your loving responses, I am overwhelmed,” she added. “Please save phone calls for a few days until I can function.”

Our heart pours out to Daniel’s friends, family, and loved ones as they grapple with this compounded tragedy.

Some of the family are still hopeful that the police have made a tragic mistake — that they’re automatically looking at the spouse.

Some have suggested that they may have been convinced by her salacious novel titles that she’s the sort of person who might plan and carry out a murder of her husband.

But we should wait and see what sort of evidence prosecutors present at trial, if it comes to that.

That is so much about this story that we do not know.
