Director Rian Johnson says he’s ‘p***ed off’ that ‘Knives Out’ is included in the title of the Glass Onion sequel because he worked hard to make them ‘self contained’ films
Rian Johnson has said he is annoyed that Knives Out had to be included in the title of the Glass Onion sequel.
The director, 49, says he worked hard to make the original Knives Out and its sequel Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery feel like separate movies that could exist independently of each other.
Speaking to The Atlantic, he said: ‘I’ve tried hard to make them self-contained. Honestly, I’m p***** off that we have “A Knives Out Mystery” in the title. You know? I want it to just be called “Glass Onion”.

‘I get it, and I want everyone who liked the first movie to know this is next in the series, but also, the whole appeal to me is it’s a new novel off the shelf every time. But there’s a gravity of a thousand suns toward serialised storytelling.’
Rian also admitted that he would have liked a longer theatrical release from Netflix.
He said: ‘I’d love it to be longer; I’d love it to be in more. But also, I appreciate that Netflix has done this, because this was a huge effort on their part, and the chains, to reach across the aisle and make this happen.
‘I’m hoping it does really well so we can demonstrate that they can complement each other.’

His confession comes after Rian recently responded to a theory that Edward Norton’s character from Glass Onion is based on Elon Musk.
He discussed the similarities during an interview with Wired published late last week.
When asked what his next film might be about, Johnson asked the interviewer for an idea.

With Glass Onion coming out just a couple months after Musk acquired Twitter, Rian noted how strange the similarities were between the movie and real life.
‘It’s so weird. It’s very bizarre,’ he said. ‘I hope there isn’t some secret marketing department at Netflix that’s funding this Twitter takeover.’
He continued, ‘There’s a lot of general stuff about that sort of species of tech billionaire that went directly into it. But obviously, it has almost a weird relevance in exactly the current moment. A friend of mine said, “Man, that feels like it was written this afternoon.” And that’s just sort of a horrible, horrible accident, you know?’
Rian also talked about putting the movie into the context of the pandemic. He explained, ‘You’re building a little microcosm of society with the suspects and the power structure within the suspects.
‘It’s this thing we all went through and we now have all these encoded signs for getting insights into these characters, like their mask choice.’
Taking to Twitter to draw the comparisons between the Bron character and Musk, one user wrote: ‘Bloody h*ll. Now that I think of it, Edward Norton’s character is so reminiscent of Elon Musk’, which was also reported by NME
Another user tweeted: ‘D*mn, real brave of Netflix and Glass Onion to outright call Elon Musk an absolute idiot and still have a Twitter account.’
Someone else seemed to sum up a number of comments by writing,’Is Glass Onion a thinly veiled dig at Elon Musk? [sic]’
