Real Madrid spring a surprise in Champions League squad

Real Madrid are bidding for a fourth consecutive Champions League win this year – but will have to do it without Cristiano Ronaldo.

The talisman has departed the Bernabeu in favour of Juventus, meaning the likes of Gareth Bale will have to step up to the plate if they are to have similar success again.

Real have been handed a favourable group, despite the inclusion of Roma, who made the semi-finals during last year.

The squads have been released for the group stages of the competition and all the big guns, as expected, have been included by Julen Lopetegui.

Starlet Vinicius Junior, a summer signing from Flamengo, has also made the cut.

Here is the 25-man squad that Real Madrid have submitted for this year’s group stage…

Real Madrid squad

The rules for the list are quite simple: there is a 25-man ‘A list’ of which two players must be goalkeepers. At least eight places must go to ‘locally trained players’. If a club can only field seven locally trained players, their squad size is reduced to 24 (or six down to 23, five to 22 etc). Any players born on January 1997 or thereafter do not have to be included in the ‘A list’.

Here is Real’s 25-man ‘A list’ squad for the group stage…

Goalkeepers: Keylor Navas, Kiko Casilla, Thibaut Courtois, Luca Zidane

Defenders: Dani Carvajal, Jesus Vallejo, Sergio Ramos, Raphael Varane, Nacho, Marcelo, Alvaro Odriozola, Sergio Reguilon, Adrian Adri, Javier Sanchez, Sergio Lopez

Midfielders: Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, Gareth Bale, Casemiro, Federico Valverde, Marcos Llorente, Marco Asensio, Isco, Dani Ceballos, Jaime Seoane, Francisco Franchu

Forwards: Mariano Diaz, Karim Benzema, Lucas Vazquez, Cristo Ramon Gonzalez Perez, Vinicius Junior
