It’s a good-ish day for R. Kelly‘s legal problems. No, the mounting evidence that R. Kelly is a creep of the highest order who likes ’em younger than young has not just suddenly disappeared or been disproven beyond reasonable doubt BUT he did pay some child support! And he also was given a second chance in a civil lawsuit against him after a judge decided to take pity on the poor rapper and reversed a decision against him. It’s the small victories for R. Kelly, I guess.
TMZ reports that R. Kelly found some coins in one of the purses he had lying around one of his recording studio/homes and managed to pay off his ex-wife Drea Kelly. He had previously been thrown in jail for not paying child support and then he couldn’t afford bail. But he was bailed out by a moronic woman with too much free money in her bank account. No word on if she Venmo-ed R. Kelly the money again this time, but after the reaction to the last time, I doubt it.
R. Kelly was in court yesterday and paid $62,ooo in unpaid child support. His current arrangement with Drea has him paying her $20,000 a month, so his payment is for March, April and May. Girl, June is coming. But don’t worry, R. Kelly is already thinking ahead. His Crisis Manager (a little late), Darrell Johnson, told TMZ that R. Kelly has put June, July and August’s payments to Drea in an escrow account and that he:
“Now looks forward to clearing his name in and being cleared of all charges in the near future.”
Confidence on par with Lori Loughlin, I see. Keep that positive attitude!
Meanwhile, in civil court (this man spins many legal plates)–R. Kelly previously lost a civil case because he didn’t show up to court despite being served notice to appear while he was in jail and couldn’t pay bail. R. Kelly’s illiteracy really came in handy this time, as his lawyer argued that he couldn’t read it.
Because R. Kelly couldn’t read the notice, a judge decided to reverse a judgment against him. His attorneys had filed a motion to throw out the default judgment against him, and the lawyers won. They claimed R. Kelly was “confused and overwhelmed” when he was served court papers in jail. And most importantly: “he’s illiterate, and didn’t know what he was reading.” Okay, but you’re his lawyers, did you read it? What are you getting paid for?
This means that R. Kelly can now fight the civil lawsuit alleging he had sex with an underage girl. His lawyers are certainly pleased, calling this a “big win for Mr. Kelly”. They also slapped at the alleged victim of underage sex abuse:
“We’ve never been part of a criminal case where an alleged victim has filed a civil case during a criminal proceeding.”
So now R. Kelly is free to clear his name in court. Which is such a good thing for him. I’m sure the first thing his lawyers do will be call him to testify in his own defence. He’s great at it.
