Piers Morgan has shared how "desperately unfair" he feels it is that his pal Kate Garraway's husband Derek Draper never had the chance to get the Covid-19 vaccine.

The 56 year old recently revealed he had contracted the coronavirus while at the Euro 2020 final on Sunday 11 July at Wembley, where he thought regulations had "disintegrated" as it was a "free-for-all".

The TV presenter described how he was left with chills, aches, a horrific cough and sneezing fits. While the symptoms have since disappeared, he's been left with a voice "like Barry White".

During his battle with the deadly bug, Piers couldn't help but think of his former colleague Kate, 54, and her 53 year old husband who Piers said "remains in a virtual coma 15 months after being rushed to hospital at the height of the first wave of the pandemic" after experiencing a headache and breathing problems.

He highlighted that the key difference between himself and Derek is that Piers caught the virus after having had both doses of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine, while Kate's other half was left totally unprotected.

Recalling a recent conversation with blonde beauty Kate, who recently apologised for a guest who swore on GMB, Piers wrote in his Mail On Sunday column: "When Kate told me what her daily routine is now like, it exhausted me just listening to her. 'I don't know how you do it,' I said.

"'What choice do I have?' She replied.

"'Derek is the love of my life.' Then, being Kate, she turned the subject back to me and my Covid experience. 'Anyway, how are YOU getting on?'"

Joking, Piers said his bout of the bug was "far worse" as he couldn't taste his wine, before turning serious.

"'You know, Kate,' I replied, more seriously, 'I've been thinking about you guys so much in the past week. I've felt pretty awful with Covid but the vaccine may well have saved my life. Derek never had the chance to take one. That just seems so desperately unfair.'

"'It is,' she agreed, 'but I just hope everyone who can take it, does. I wouldn't wish what we're going through on anyone.'"

Kate recently shared an update on Derek's condition after he returned home following over a year in hospital.

Speaking on the ITV programme, she told viewers: "He's very up and down, we're certainly a long way out of the woods. Being at home we have seen some things improve…
