A court in California has ordered Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams to pay nearly $5 million to Marvin Gaye‘s family over copyright infringement of the late singer’s hit song.
In a lawsuit filed in the U.S. District court in California, Gaye’s family alleged that Thicke and Williams copied lyrical content of Gaye’s 1977 hit “Got to Give It Up” for their 2013 single “Blurred Lines” after finding similarities in both the songs.
Ending the five-year legal battle, U.S. District Judge John A. Kronstadt ordered Thicke, Williams and Williams’ More Water From Nazareth Publishing company to jointly pay Gaye’s family damages of nearly $2.9 million.
In addition, Thicke has to pay more than $1.7 million and Williams and his publishing company $357,631 in separate awards to Gaye’s estate.
