Paul McCartney calls out ‘mad captain’ President Donald Trump for denying ‘repeated warnings’ of climate change in new song
Sir Paul McCartney has revealed he is calling out President Donald Trump in a song from his latest album Egypt Station.
Speaking to the BBC, the 76-year-old legendary musician said that when he was writing the song Despite Repeated Warnings, he had the politician in mind when singing about ‘mad captains.’
Paul also said the song takes aim at those in denial of climate change, which Trump has previously described as a ‘hoax.’

In the song, Paul sings lyrics including: ‘Despite repeated warnings of dangers up ahead, the captain won’t be listening to what’s been said,’ and ‘those who shout the loudest, may not always be the smartest.’

The former Beatle then went onto explain he took inspiration for the song from those directing others into an inevitably disastrous situation.
He said: ‘[It] basically says, ‘occasionally, we’ve got a mad captain sailing this boat we’re all on and he is just going to take us to the iceberg [despite] being warned it’s not a cool idea’.”

When asked whether the ‘mad captain’ was a reference to Trump, he said: ‘Well I mean, obviously it’s Trump.
‘But I don’t get too involved because there’s plenty of them about. He’s not the only one.’
In the early days of his political career, Trump admitted he thought climate change was a ‘hoax’ created by the Chinese, tweeting in 2012: ‘The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive.’

And it seemed his views had changed very little during an interview with Piers Morgan in January, when he added: ‘There is a cooling and there is a heating, and I mean, look—it used to not be climate change. It used to be global warming. Right?
‘That wasn’t working too well, because it was getting too cold all over the place. The ice caps were going to melt, they were going to be gone by now, but now they’re setting records, so O.K., they’re at a record level.’
Trump also appeared to make light of his opinion of the subject back in December, as he tweeted during a period of bitterly cold Stateside weather: ‘Perhaps we could use a little bit of that good old Global Warming.’
