New Everton signing breaks silence over his ‘Liverpool tattoo’

New Everton signing Lucas Digne has hit back at claims he has a Liverpool tattoo, saying he turned down the chance to play for the Reds twice.

The French left-back, who completed a £22million switch to the Toffees from Barcelona on Wednesday, was mocked by Liverpool supporters after they noticed he had a rather curious tattoo.

Emblazoned across the Frenchman’s chest are the words ‘I Never Walk Alone’ – a phrase that is remarkably similar to Liverpool’s club motto ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’.

Reds supporters took to social media to laugh at the coincidence, with many suggesting it was proof that he is a fan of the ‘other club’ on Merseyside.

But on Friday Digne hit back at these claims with a defiant message: "My tattoo is not about football. Maybe they [Liverpool] are jealous because they tried to sign me twice – when I was at Lille and then at PSV. But now I’m Blue."

Digne has put pen to paper on a five-year deal at Everton, and will provide direct competition to 33-year-old Leighton Baines.

Upon signing the left-back told EvertonTV: "Everton is a big club with a great history. I want to play games, win games and excite the fans with the quality of our football.

"I played good football in Rome and I played well, too, in Barcelona. I progressed a lot as a player and as a person by playing with the best players in the world.

"When you play with the best players it helps you build your character and, of course, it helps on the training ground and during games, too, because you want to give the best of you.

"I want to show my best football here and discover the best league in the world. Everybody loves the Premier League. I am loving the fact I am coming here.

"I am not afraid, I am excited. For me, it is a new challenge to discover a country, a league, people and a great club such as Everton. It is fabulous."
