As true fans will remember, back in 2008, Miley Cyrus was in a complex friendship / love triangle with fellow teen stars Nick Jonas and Selena Gomez. The three had been Hollywood backlot friends for years at that point.
But when Miley and Nick, who had officially begun dating in the summer of 2006, split in December of 2007 and Nick began dating Selena, things got strained. Still, somehow, the friendships remained intact.
The teen angst that surrounded that crazy triangle is what makes one of Miley’s latest throwback posts so meaningful. In the post, Miley shares a video clip of herself performing the song “7 Things,” a thinly-veiled song about the 7 things that Miley hated about her ex Nick, at the 2008 Teen Choice Awards. During the clip, Miley steps into the audience and delivers the key line of the whole song … with none other than Selena.
That key line is about the 7th and worse thing that Miley hated about her ex, namely –“And the 7th thing I hate the most that you do / You make me love you.” To see the two friends and romantic rivals belt out the line together was a moment for teen America at the time.
Miley captioned the throwback clip that she posted today with a reference to the innocence of that time compared to the more sophisticated tastes that teens have today when enjoying a song like Ariana Grande’s “7 Rings.” “Your generation = 7 Rings” Miley wrote, “MY generation = 7 Things … Simpler times. @selenagomez #MillenialsVSGenZ,”
The post apparently struck a chord not only with many fans, but also several former teen stars. Selena Gomez, who rarely responds to anyone on social media these days, could not help but post a reply, “tbt -such babies” ending her comment with two purple hearts.
To that comment, Miley responded “@selenagomez Yasssssss!”
Then, equally unexpectedly, Demi Lovato — on-again / off-again BFF of both Selena and Nick at the time — responded to the clip with one word: “Iconic.” She also added an emoji of applauding hands to show her appreciation.
Finally, Ariana reposted the clip to her own social media and added her thoughts. “7 things,” she wrote, “defined me.”
