Melinda Messenger slams 'anti-ageing' reaction to her grey hair

‘It’s very peculiar’: Melinda Messenger, 51, hits back at ‘anti-ageing’ reaction to snap of her natural grey hair after she ditched her trademark blonde locks

Melinda Messenger has hit back at an ‘anti-ageing’ fan reaction to her natural grey hair after she ditched her trademark blonde locks.

The former Page 3 model, 51, took to Instagram earlier this month to debut her silver tresses and reveal she was growing out her signature blonde hair.

But Melinda has now revealed that she received many ‘anti-ageing’ comments in response to her selfie, as she slammed the reaction as ‘very peculiar’.

Criticism: Melinda Messenger has hit back at an ‘anti-ageing’ reaction to her natural grey hair after she ditched her trademark blonde locks

She took to Instagram on Wednesday to share more selfies of her grey locks and criticised some people for sending negative comments about her natural hair and make-up free look.

The TV presenter also shared a video of herself to Instagram over the weekend where she addressed the backlash, slamming people for being ‘anti-ageing’ as ‘we all experience it’.

In the candid video, she said: ‘Hello loves, so I had some feedback on my picture of my grey hair, which is coming through slowly, and the fact I wasn’t wearing any make-up, which is bizarre.

‘I had some lovely comments and a lot of anti-ageing comments, lots of ‘oh gosh you look so old’ and ‘it adds years to you’.

Empowering: In a lengthy caption, Melinda addressed the negative comments she received about her natural hair colour, encouraging other people to ‘be free’

‘And it’s just this thing about ageing isn’t it, some people seem to be really against it, and it’s such a natural thing, and god willing something we all experience.

‘So why be so against it? It’s very peculiar, but there we have it. What I have realised is that ageing and getting older is a process of growing.

‘And growing to learn how to love each other more easily, and more importantly – most importantly – learn how to love ourselves.’

In an accompanying caption, Melinda again addressed the negative comments she received about her natural hair colour, encouraging other people to ‘be free’.

All smiles: Melinda once again took to her Instagram on Wednesday to once again encourage ‘self-love’ as she shared an array of beaming selfies

She continued: ‘I was curious to see how people felt [about my grey hair] and it seems there’s a lot of anti aging. I wonder if it’s because it reflects back our own mortality?

‘Better to accept that we will all die at some point, so that we can get on with living.

‘I noticed too that the comments here in our little online community were positive, supportive and encouraging. That is so lovely to see, and thank you, you are amazing and appreciated.

‘So yes let yourself go! Let yourself go be free.’

New look: The former Page 3 model, 51, took to Instagram earlier this month to debut her silver tresses and revealed that she was growing out her signature blonde hair

In a lengthy caption, the former glamour model opened up about not ‘valuing’ herself in the past and said she has finally reached a point where she feels like she is ‘good enough’.

She admitted that deciding to grow her silver hair was an ‘act of self love’ for her as she said she has spent time coming to terms with feeling good in herself.

She penned: ‘Why allowing my silver/grey hair to grow is an act of self love for me.

‘I used to feel that I had to look a certain way, that I needed makeup and nice hair especially if I was going to be seen out in publicly.

Acceptance: Melinda has revealed that deciding to grow her silver hair is an ‘act of self love’ for her as she said she has spent time coming to terms with feeling good in herself

‘What I’ve come to understand, is that it was because I didn’t really value who I was. Partly the conditioning of getting validation for ‘looking nice’ but a whole lot of not loving myself enough.

‘It’s taken me 51 years to see that I was always good enough (we all are) so I don’t want to spend the next years of life feeling I have to be anything other than just myself. I have finally given myself permission to just be.

‘This doesn’t mean I’m not ever going to get a treatment or go out all done up, I will, but I will do that because its fun and because I want to. Not because I don’t feel ok about myself just as I am.

‘That way I tell the child inside of me, I love you just as you are so she can get on with the proper business of playing and loving life.’

Look back: Melinda worked as a grid girl in the late 90s alongside the likes of Katie Price and Emma Noble

It comes after Melinda debuted her silver tresses on Instagram earlier this month and asked for advice from her hairdressing friends as to what she should do next with her hair.

She wrote: ‘Well like the trees leaves change their colour through the seasons so do we. Do I blend out the blonde or grow it out slowly?

‘Any advice from my hair dresser friends welcome ☺ #silverhair #greyhairtransition #greyhair.’

Wearing minimal make-up in the snap, Melinda wore a green T-shirt under denim dungarees for her close-up.

Melinda, who shot to fame after being spotted on a billboard for a windows firm in Swindon in 1997, recently said she would wear heavy make-up to cover up feeling like she wasn’t good enough.

‘For me it was a mask, it was a way of trying to make myself feel good because I didn’t feel that way on the inside,’ she said.

Melinda is a mother to Morgan, 22, Flynn, 20, and Evie, 18, and parted ways with her ex-husband Wayne Roberts in 2012, and she admitted last year that she wanted to start dating again.

Since splitting from Wayne after 14 years of marriage, Melinda has dated a ski instructor who she met while filming Channel 4’s The Jump.

The star was most recently in a relationship with Chris Harding who she met on Celebrity First Dates in 2018 but the pair later called it quits.

Melinda is still looking for love and joined the Sara Eden matchmaking agency after a string of unfortunate romances, including a man who she broke up with because he booked her a £20,000 holiday in a move she felt was pressure-packed.

But Melinda said she has no desire to get married again and is simply looking for a partner who she can spent her life with.

The mother-of-three admitted she has found it difficult to meet the right person and revealed she often gets chatted up by men who are half her age.

Speaking of famous faces who have tried to nab dates with her, Melinda claimed she was once chatted up by Spiderman’s Tobey Maguire and was asked on a date by Val Kilmer.
