If you had a famous professor, like, say, Matthew McConaughey, what kind of professor would he be? Chill? Or would he make an indecipherable syllabus that looks like it was written by True Detective’s Rust? Or would he show up to class stoned out of his mind and recite poetry like Moondog from this year’s The Beach Bum?
We’ll get our answer this fall—according to the Associated Press, McConaughey will teach in The University of Texas’s Department of Radio-Television-Film. McConaughey, who graduated from The University of Texas in 1993, has been a visiting professor there since 2015. The university added that the actor is respected for his “willingness to work with students beyond the classroom.” (Going over scripts, drinking Wild Turkey during office hours sounds pretty nice.)
He’ll continue to teach a class called “Script to Screen”—which last year, focused on his 2018 film, White Boy Rick, and how much a movie script can change during production. His resume is probably a little more impressive than your average film adjunct—having won the Oscar for Best Actor in 2014 for Dallas Buyers Club.
“The [students] ask me some innocent questions that remind me of when I was 20 and had those same questions,” McConaughey told Texas Monthly about the class. “I wondered: Is there a way to put science to the magic of how a script gets to the screen?”
Unfortunately, his Rate My Professors page only has two reviews over the past two years, both positive. One of them?
“His class was ALRIGHT, ALRIGHT, ALRIGHT!”
