Matt Hancock leaves I'm A Celeb viewers 'cringing' with singalong

‘Talk about embarrassing!’: Matt Hancock leaves I’m A Celeb viewers ‘cringing’ as he attempts to join in Sweet Caroline singalong without knowing the words

  • The former Health Secretary, 44, left viewers cringing with his singing attempt
  • As campmates gathered for a singalong Matt didn’t know the words to the song
  • Earlier in the episode the MP discussed his lockdown breaking affair

Within moments of entering the jungle he’d treated the nation to the dulcet sounds of an Ed Sheeran rendition.

And musical Matt Hancock struck again during Thursday’s episode of I’m A Celebrity as he gave it his all belting out Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline.

Unfortunately for the former Health Secretary, 44, his enthusiasm could only get him so far as he stumbled over the fact he didn’t seem to know a single lyric in the song.

Belting it out: Musical Matt Hancock struck again during Thursday’s episode of I’m A Celebrity as he gave it his all belting out Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline

After former Lioness Jill Scott was awarded three plays of the football anthem as her luxury item, the campmates gathered for a rousing rendition of the hit.

Trying to join in, Matt began bopping around and mumbling along, yet it was clear to ‘cringing’ viewers that he didn’t know the words.

Taking to Twitter, viewers penned: ‘watching matt pretend to know sweet caroline #ImACeleb’; ‘MATT HANCOCK DOESNT KNOW SWEET CAROLINE????’; ‘Matt clearly doesn’t know the words to sweet Caroline #ImACeleb’;

‘PLEASE TELL ME EVERYONE SAW THAT MATT HANDCOCK DIDNT KNOW THE WORDS TO SWEET CAROLINE LIKE SORRY ARE YOU EVEN BRITISH #ImACeleb’; ‘matt hancock not knowing the words to sweet caroline educate urself #ImACeleb.’

Oops: Unfortunately for the former Health Secretary his enthusiasm could only get him so far as he stumbled over the fact he didn’t seem to know a single lyric in the song

Others added: ‘i thought matt singing ed sheeran was bad until i just saw him singing sweet caroline. #ImACeleb’; ‘Does anyone else feel uncomfortable watching Matt Hancock sing Sweet Caroline #ImACeleb

‘Watching Hancock trying to sing Sweet Caroline was the cringiest thing ever’; ‘My god how uncomfortable did Matt Hancock look when sweet Caroline was playing talk about embarrassing’; ‘Matt Hancock singing Sweet Caroline is the most awkward thing I’ve ever seen.’

Rather surprisingly Matt wasn’t the only one to flub the performance, with Jill herself confessing ‘I don’t actually know the words!’ leaving the rest of her campmates in hysterics.

Amused viewers tweeted: ‘JILL NOT ACTUALLY KNOWING THE WORDS TO SWEET CAROLINE WHEN IT SOUNDTRACKED THE EUROS WIN IS SO PERSONAL TO ME #ImACeleb’; ‘Jill not actually knowing the words to Sweet Caroline… I CAN’T.’

Not impressed: Trying to join in, Matt began bopping around and mumbling along, yet it was clear to ‘cringing’ viewers that he didn’t know the words

Earlier in the programme, Matt insisted that he ‘messed up and fessed up’ after his affair with Gina Coladangelo when they ‘fell in love’ – but cringed as fellow campmate Babatúndé Aléshé repeatedly ribbed him about ‘grabbing her booty’.

The MP spoke about the ‘consequences’ of being caught in a clinch on his Whitehall office’s CCTV, which made headlines around the world, cost him his job and led to the collapse of his 15-year marriage to his wife Martha, the mother of his three young children.

Sat on a log in the camp, Babatúndé took him to task over his behaviour and told him: ‘You messed up’ after Mr Hancock confided in him that life had been ‘tough’ since the affair emerged and he was forced to quit Boris Johnson’s cabinet.

The MP was then repeatedly mocked for ‘grabbing the booty’ of his lover, to which he cringed and said: ‘Oh give over’. Babatúndé said: ‘Look man, I don’t judge you bruv. I may take the p*ss out of you.’

Hilarious: Fans were in hysterics at Jill not knowing the words to the football anthem

Matt said he is ‘totally’ in love with Gina, adding: ‘That’ll be the best thing about being kicked out, seeing her on the bridge.’

But in a nod to the pain he had caused his wife and children since their affair was revealed in June 2021, he added: ‘That also had a lot of other consequences obviously’.

Their affair was later found to have breached the very lockdown rules he helped set while he was Health Secretary in charge of the UK’s response to the Covid pandemic.

The passionate clinch marked the end of his marriage to his now-estranged wife Martha and his time in cabinet.

Speaking out: Matt addressed his widely-publicised affair with PR guru Gina Coladangelo just a day after entering the I’m A Celebrity jungle as he chatted with Babatunde Aleshe

The MP for West Suffolk faced a frosty reception on joining camp on Wednesday night’s show which was made worse by the fact he only failed to win six out of a possible 11 stars for camp.

But last night he won all 11 after being voted in by the British public to take on Tentacles of Terror. The trial saw him gasping for breath after being locked into a giant octopus-shaped contraption and lowered into a tank of water.

‘The eels, the sea snakes, I was absolutely petrified,’ he said on completing his second Bushtucker Trial.

‘I can’t believe it. I was so nervous. My heart was racing. I’m really proud of myself for having pulled that off.’
