Martin Lewis issues Twitter apology as he tells fans ‘can’t believe I screwed up so quick’

Martin Lewis gives update on SEISS grant for self-employed

Martin Lewis has offered an apology on Twitter after admitting that he “screwed up so quickly”. The Money Saving Expert’s apology came after he failed to use hashtags properly in a recent tweet. A quick-thinking fan noticed and immediately corrected him.

“I can’t believe I screwed up so quickly

Martin Lewis

The TV personality’s erroneous message read: “In #askmartin on @bbc5live today from 1:05pm we want you to tell us ‘what money lesson would you give your 18 year old self if you could go back in time.’

“Do reply here. Plus the continued nightmare for #excludeduk and why energy comparisons are currently UNDERESTIMATING savings.”

Instead of capitalising every word in each hashtag, Martin used lowercase letters for both, making it hard to read.

A fan online quickly informed him of his mistake.

They told him: “@MartinSLewis – shouldn’t that be #AskMartin and #ExludedUK?”

However the tweet informing Martin was incorrect itself and was quickly amended.

The correction wrote: “Or #ExcludedUK – arrrggh.”

In response to the corrective tweets, another user reassured the star: “It happens to the best of us.

“Perhaps you might want to rethink being so hard on Martin.”

It soon transpired that the TV personality had asked his followers to remind him to use the hashtags.

One person replied: “He asked yesterday to be reminded if he forgets.”

Martin’s post addressing the situation read: “Yes you’re right – I can’t believe I screwed up so quickly.

“Apologies. I was doing it on my phone at speed via Swype text.

“In the words of Boxer from Animal Farm, ‘I will work harder’ at this. #GenuinelySorry.”

In George Orwell’s novel, Animal Farm, Boxer is a hardworking but naïve and ignorant cart horse.

In the book, Boxer’s personal motto and answer to every problem was: “I will work harder!”

In spite of the hashtag faux pas, nearly 250 people commented with their favourite money lessons for their 18-year-old selves.

One comment read: “Don’t lend to a boyfriend!”

Another advised: “Start your pension when you start work.

“I didn’t because I thought I had better things to spend my money on and I totally regret that decision now that I am older and a little bit wiser.”

Martin’s Twitter error comes days after the finance expert gave his supposition about what support could be available to those who have been excluded from the government’s Self-Employment Income Support Scheme.
