‘I knew I was about to die’: Love Island’s Ellie Spence details horrifying near death experience after being impaled on a spike

Ellie Spence detailed the terrifying moment she almost died after impaling herself on a huge spiked gate.
The Love Islander, 25, opened up about her near-death experience on Instagram on Wednesday, showing some graphic images of her injuries after a drunken night out went very wrong.
The beauty, who was 18 at the time, said while returning to a friend’s home at 3am she impaled herself on a spike – which embedded itself 3mm from a major artery.
The business development executive, who entered the villa as a bombshell, explained: ‘Around this time just before summer when I was 18, I impaled myself on a steel speared gate and almost accidentally killed myself.
‘I’d just finished my A-level exams and me and one of my best friends Livvy went out on a night out, we got back to her house in the early hours of the morning and the gate in front of her house was locked.

‘After climbing the gate and reaching the top, I put my foot on the bar in-between the spears, my foot slipped and one of the spears impaled me directly in the joint of my leg.
‘I somehow spun around and found myself hanging backwards off the gate, 10ft in the air.’
She revealed her friend ‘had no idea she was impaled’ due to the darkness and she kept passing out from the pain and blood loss.
Ellie admitted she ‘knew she was about to die’ and had given up when a ‘voice’ began screaming at her to wake up.
The reality star continued: ‘I could barely get my words out from the pain and panic I was in and Livvy had no idea I was impaled.
‘After 10 minutes of miscommunicating with each other in complete darkness, my leg had torn from the very front of my joint to the back of my bum.
‘I started to pass out from the pain, loss of blood and mentally coming to terms with the fact I just knew I was about to die.
‘I gave up and hung in silence and after a few minutes I suddenly heard a voice screaming in my ear to get up, get up, get up repeatedly (I didn’t recognise the voice) and I saw a bright white light (FYI I am not an overly spiritual person so this is still crazy to me to this day)

‘I would have bled out’: She revealed her friend ‘had no idea she was impaled’ due to the darkness and she kept passing out from the pain and blood loss before eventually being rushed to hospital
She explained: ‘I was rushed to hospital and told I was 3mm away from my main artery so just one more tiny tear I would have bled out and died hanging on the gate’
‘I then immediately woke up and out of nowhere started perfectly directing Livvy and she thankfully got me off the gate.’
If the spike had gone into Ellie’s artery, it would have been advisable not to take her leg off the spike until medics arrived to prevent catastrophic blood loss.
Ellie was immediately rushed to hospital and was told she had missed her main artery by 3mm.
She added: ‘I was rushed to hospital and told I was 3mm away from my main artery so just one more tiny tear I would have bled out and died hanging on the gate.
‘Livvy is my real life angel and she saved my life that day. Coming to terms with very narrowly escaping death is a feeling I’ll never truly be able to put into words and the long recovery that followed really really made me appreciate how lucky I am to be given a second chance at experiencing life.’
Along with describing what had happened to herself when she was 18, Ellie shared a number of snaps including two of her horrifying gashes and stitches.
She also uploaded two incredible bikini snaps as she posed in the ocean donning an eye catching orange and yellow two piece showcasing her scars on her leg and bottom.
Ellie opened up about body confidence in the post as well telling her 82.5 thousand followers that she doesn’t always feel bikini ready but her ‘scar is always going to be there’.
She penned: ‘I know with summer coming up it’s a daunting time for anybody that doesn’t feel ready in their body but my scar is always going to be there so however comfortable or uncomfortable I feel in my body at that time, I have had to learn that my body will always be ready.
‘I have really dipped in and out of feeling body confident throughout my life as most of us women do with constant changing body trends and standards we’re pressured into meeting.

‘But it is SO normal to have a lump or bump or stretch mark or whatever it may be.’
She went on to detail how a nurse told her, when she was getting her stitches out, she would ‘never wear a bikini again’.
Ellie said she ‘was so focused on being able to walk again’ that she ‘rolled her eyes’ and was just thankful to be alive.
She added: ‘Looking back at just 18 years old those words clearly had more of an effect on me than I would have ever liked to previously admit.
‘However, I have learnt to never ever let anything hold me back and I think it’s so important to not let your body hold you back from enjoying not just this summer but the rest of your life!!’
Ellie concluded the message by telling fans to feels as confident as they can and to go out and enjoy life because ‘it’s so short and incredibly precious’.
Previously Ellie spoke on the Secure the Insecure podcast and revealed: ‘It was the scariest night of my life and a night I will never ever, ever forget. It has completely shaped who I am.’
Speaking candidly she went on: ‘I pretty much hung off it backwards and ripped front of my leg right round to the back of my bum and I just completely ripped my leg off.
Near death experience: Ellie went on to detail how a nurse told her, when she was getting her stitches out, she would ‘never wear a bikini again’. Ellie said she ‘was so focused on being able to walk again’ that she ‘rolled her eyes’ and was just thankful to be alive
‘I just remember hanging there in so much pain. So panicked. I mean, adrenaline running, like disorientated, just thinking like, I’m gonna die. And I was just like, I’m just gonna die.
‘Everything was running through my mind, like my mum and dad are basically going to have to bury me now, I can’t believe I’ve done this’.
She continued: ‘And I just gave up, I just stopped responding to my best friend Livy who literally I owe her my life. And I just stopped responding’.
‘And I just laid there and just, I just carried on letting my leg rip. And I just Yeah, I just laid there and I was like, ‘yep, I’m gonna die’.
Ellie was dumped from the ITV2 series after viewers voted her and Jordan Odofin as the least compatible couple.
