EXCLUSIVE ‘There was little effort from him’: Love Island’s Demi Jones breaks her silence on Luke Mabbott split as she rules out reconciliation

Demi Jones has broken her silence on her split from Luke Mabbott, four months after they finished in third place on the first-ever winter edition of Love Island.

In an exclusive interview with MailOnline, the reality star, 21, confirmed the pair officially called it quits in May, a decision she claims was encouraged by the heating engineer, 25.

The TV personality – who recently launched plumping kits with Project Lip and her own loungewear brand – admitted that while ‘there’s no bad blood’ between the former couple, she doesn’t believe they’ll rekindle their romance in the future.

In January, the auburn beauty entered the Cape Town villa as a bombshell, initially embarking on a romance with Nas Majeed.

But once the hopefuls were put to the test with a trip to Casa Amor, Demi was left heartbroken when she discovered her love interest returned with Eva Zapico.

To her surprise, sparks eventually flew with Justin Bieber-lookalike Luke, and the pair went on to land a place in the final.

Fast forward a few months later, Portsmouth-based Demi is now single again, confessing the coronavirus lockdown drove the couple apart.

‘That ship has sailed’: The TV personality admitted that while ‘there’s no bad blood’ between the former couple, she doesn’t believe they’ll rekindle their romance in the future

Speaking about their split for the first time, the TV star told us: ‘We’ve completely called it off now, I think it was brought about more from his behalf than mine, but we’re mutual and friendly.

‘With lockdown, it drove us apart and we live so far away from each other. I feel like there wasn’t a lot of effort made with communication, so we drifted as a result. It’s a shame and bad timing.’

Admitting she was left disappointed as Luke opted against making them official, the influencer elaborated: ‘I had my hopes that he’d ask me once we came out of Love Island but it never really happened. As lockdown went on, little effort was made so it was called off.’

On whether she’d be open to a future reunion, Demi defiantly said: ‘I feel like the ship has sailed now due to the way it was handled.

‘I feel like we were supposed to be honeymoon phase, I’d text him often but that wasn’t really reciprocated. He is a lovely boy.

‘I want to see him when this is all over though as there’s no bad blood there, we’ll be fine. Everyone is being kind and supportive.’

The petite star praised her co-stars for ‘being supportive and not taking sides’, and revealed she’s still in frequent contact with twins Jess and Eve Gale, recruitment consultant Jamie Clayton and scaffolder Ched Uzor.

Predictions: On who she believes will go the full distance, she admitted: ‘I think Siânnise [Fudge] and Luke [Trotman, pictured] and Paige [Turley] and Finn [Tapp] will go the long run’

On which couples she believes will go the full distance, she admitted: ‘I think Siânnise [Fudge] and Luke [Trotman] and Paige [Turley] and Finn [Tapp] will go the long run.

‘Even though Siânnise was my bestie in the villa, she’s so loved up with Luke now and is so busy, it’s hard to keep in touch.’

The ITV2 dating series has been responsible for providing many of the former contestants with thriving careers in beauty, fashion and TV.

While Demi is still hopeful she can follow in the footsteps of ex-Islanders, she confessed she’s been left ‘worried’ by the lack of opportunities available due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Demi has just collaborated with Project Lip, which boasts celebrity fans including Michelle Keegan, Kate Wright and Jacqueline Jossa, for her first project since leaving the villa

The style advisor divulged: ‘I came out of Love Island and I was so excited with a world of opportunity, but I’m sort of brought back down to earth with the lockdown.

‘In a way it’s been nice because it’s allowed me to spend time with my family and has kept me grounded, but at the same time I’ve been worried as I’ve missed out on quite a few opportunities, we’re definitely getting there now.’

And Demi is right ― she has just collaborated with Project Lip for her first project since leaving the villa.

‘This is a nice confidence-boost’: The University of Winchester alum labelled the brand ‘amazing’ and insisted the products are a good alternative to filler

On her new venture, she said: ‘Project Lip is amazing, it’s vegan-friendly, cruelty free and the team have been lovely and so supportive. We’ve released four lip kits.

‘I’ve never had filler before in my life, so this is really nice and a confidence-boost. I’m only 21 and there’s so much pressure to get surgery done, so this is a nice pick-me up.’

Project Lip boasts celebrity fans including the likes of Michelle Keegan, Kate Wright and Jacqueline Jossa.

The University of Winchester alum has taken things a step further by also creating her own loungewear brand for ‘girls who want to feel uplifted’.

‘We’ve been working on Demi Lounge since I came out of the villa, it’s all my own’, she said. ‘As loungewear has been doing really well, I wanted to create a collection for girls to enjoy and feel uplifted, even though it is unisex.

‘I like my curves!’ Elsewhere in the interview, the bubbly star shared her take on body image, insisting she’s ‘always been a confident girl’ and likes to ‘focus on the positive things in life’.

‘It’s really comfortable as well. People who know me know that I’m really loud, so we have some cute slogan tees which emulate my personality.’

Demi explained: ‘I’m a pretty confident girl and I embrace my differences as a redhead, even before Love Island I’ve never put a lot of pressure on myself. With the show, I wasn’t given a great deal of time [to prepare], maybe only six weeks.

‘I’ve never done stupid diets or anything like that because I like my curves, that’s who I am. I don’t feel like I’ve had to conform to the pressures of young girls, but I am aware of it.

‘They reach out every week’: On adjusting to fame, the YouTuber praised ITV for its aftercare, which was updated last year following the deaths of Caroline Flack (pictured in 2019)

‘I understand why others would want surgery, but it’s just not for me. I just like to be myself as much as possible.’

On adjusting to fame and its effect on her mental health, the YouTuber praised ITV for its aftercare, which was updated last year following the deaths of Sophie Gradon, Mike Thalassitis, and Caroline Flack.

‘For me, it’s all about balance’, she said. ‘Adjusting to fame has been hard, but ITV have been amazing and they reach out every week to see if we’re okay.

‘With me personally, when I feel like I’ve been on Instagram too much, let’s say three hours in a day, my iPhone will alert me and I’ll do something else like read a book. At 11pm my iPhone also locks all my apps, so I have time to myself and I stop staring at my screen.

‘When I came off of Love Island I would get so excited at my messages and would read through them, but now I don’t. Instagram is quite good as it filters the most read comments. I also made my account block out nasty words so I never see them.

‘The other day I had my first troll in person. I was on the beach and these men were shouting really nasty things at me, but I just kept my chin up and wanted to keep calm. My motto is, ‘if they don’t know you personally, don’t take it personal.’

In a years’ time, Demi hopes to delve deeper into the beauty, fashion and skincare business, and eventually return to the small screen with a different focus – presenting.

The ITV star explained: ‘At the moment I’m working really hard with beauty, fashion and skincare, but I’d love to do something with my hair too as I’m the only redhead from the series.

‘For long-term, I’d love to get back into TV and do presenting, whether it’s with children’s TV or history and archaeology from my degree, I’d really like to do that once everything gets into motion.

‘I’m going to reach out to TV companies and really get my foot in the door with that aspect.’
