Lil Nas X’s Old Town Road becomes Billboard’s longest running No. 1 at a 17 week reign as he pushes out Justin Bieber and Despacito

He bought the beat of an online store for a mere $30 in October last year. 

And Lil Nas X’s return has been immersible, with the singer’s Old Town Road becoming Billboard’s longest ever running number one single after remaining in the top spot for an impressive 17 weeks. 

The 20-year-old’s song featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, sees him knock off 2017’s Despacito (by Daddy Yankee, Luis Fonsi and Justin Bieber) and 1995’s One Sweet Day (Boys ll Men and Mariah Carey) – which were tied at 16 weeks.

They did it! Lil Nas X and his song, Old Town Road featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, officially became Billboard’s longest running number one track at 17-weeks on Monday

Lil Nas X, real name, Montero Lamar Hill, took to social media to share his gratitude and excitement over the record. 

‘Last year in october [sic], as a struggling artist [sic] starting to lose faith in what i could be, i went looking for beats on youtube [sic],’ he began. 

‘i remember clicking on so many generic sounding beats [sic] trying to find the right one for me [sic]. when suddenly i came across a country-trap [sic] sounding masterpiece [sic].’ 

Humbled: Lil Nas X, real name, Montero Lamar Hill, took to social media to share his gratitude and excitement over the record

‘i immediately knew i would make something special out of it [sic]! my sister told me i had little time left before i had to leave her house [sic] after being there for months [sic] promoting my music [sic]online [sic] and not helping [sic] her out much,’ he confessed.  

Lil Nas X continued to explain that he used his sadness as motivation to create the best song he possibly could.  

i was so upset [sic]! i used it as motivation for the song [sic]! i jokingly/seriously saw myself as a loner [sic] cowboy[sic] needing to [sic] run away from it all [sic]! I went out [sic] on my sister’s back porch [sic] and listened to the beat [sic] OVER [sic]& OVER [sic] & OVER[sic]!!’

He continued: then it came to me[sic]!! in my best singing voice [sic] i sung [sic] “YEAHHH IM GONNA TAKE MY HORSE [sic] TO THE OLD TOWN ROAD [sic] IM GONNA RIDEEEE TIL I CANT NO MORE [sic]” I LOVED IT ALREADY!’

It’s official! Lil Nas knocked of Justin Bieber and Mariah Carey for their tied 16-week reigns for Despacito (2017) and One Sweet Day (1995) 

The 20-year-old, who recently came out as gay, explained that after calling in love with his track, he continued to work really hard on it day in and day out.  

‘i started to work on it [sic] EVERY SINGLE DAY[sic]. it needed to be funny[sic], it needed to be catchy[sic], it needed to be hip hop [sic], it needed to be country[sic], & it needed to be short[sic]!!’ 

 ‘by the time i was finished [sic] setting it up [sic] i was out of my sister’s crib [sic] and at my brothers [sic] place.’  

Lil Nas X recalled the time on the track had been between the months of October and December.  

‘on december 2️⃣nd i went into the studio [sic] & recorded OLD TOWN ROAD & put it out the exact same day!! did i know it would become the longest running number 1️⃣ song of all time? [sic] NO! ‼️ but i am so thankful [sic] that this blessing ✨ has been placed upon me [sic].’

He’s out! Justin Bieber’s Despacito with Daddy Yankee and Luis Fonsi was knocked off the top spot on Monday  

‘this song has changed my life [sic] and the way i see the world [sic] around me [sic] in less than a year [sic]. thank you to every single person☝️ who has been apart of this journey [sic]. as i said before, it’s just the beginning! [sic]’  

Lil Nas X’s record comes as he takes the tied-first 16-week songs Despacito and One Sweet Day off the board.

With Mariah Carey on the 1995 track, it’s not sure if she has or will ever call to congratulate him – not at all worried about her record being broken last week. 

When asked by Blackgrid if she was worried, she replied: ‘Dah-ling No!’ 

She reportedly also joked that no one would want to hear her suggestion for a remix of One Sweet Day and Old Town Road.   

Will she call to congratulate the new winner? With Mariah Carey on the 1995 track, it’s not sure if she has or will ever call to congratulate him – not at all worried about her record being broken last week. When asked by Blackgrid if she was worried, she replied: ‘Dah-ling No!’
