Laura Whimore has defended herself against a former Love Island contestant who claimed she only got the hosting gig because of her husband Iain Sterling.

The Love Island host, 35, fired back at the accusations saying she has ‘worked in television for 14 years’ on numerous jobs before landing the primetime role, which Rachel Finni insisted was only because she is married to narrator Iain, 34.

Rachel recently spoke out about Laura when discussing the upcoming Love Island series on Murad Merali’s YouTube channel, telling the host: ‘I’m kind of gutted Laura Whitmore is hosting it though, I thought we’d get a Maya Jama or AJ Odudu.’

Hitting back: Laura Whimore has defended herself against a former Love Island contestant who claimed she only got the hosting gig because of her husband Iain Sterling

Awkwardly, Rachel, 29, appeared on the most recent series of the show last summer which Laura hosted, after taking over the role from the late Caroline Flack.

Taking to her Instagram stories during a Q&A with her fans, Laura took the opportunity to hit back at Rachel’s comments, in which she accused the star of not being a good presenter.

Speaking to her camera as she enjoyed some down time ahead of the event, Laura said: ‘I’m not going to give too much energy to it because there’s always stuff like this and you kind of just brush it off but I think we need to be careful when we discuss women and their work.

‘I’ve worked in telly for 14 years. I won a competition to be the face of MTV and have stayed working from job to job.

‘I’ve done incredible things all over the world, with the best teams, but I’ve never got a job because of a guy I dated.’

She continued: ‘And it’s horrible when you see if coming from other women because for so many years women have talked about who they are going out with.

‘They’re only defined by who they are going out with, despite all the work and build up leading up to that and they are their own individual person, with their own experience.’

Laura went on to add: ‘It’s a shame because I think we’re never really going to have full power and empowerment as a sex if we keep doing that.’

Laura’s defence came as she attended the Pronovias event in Barcelona on Friday night, in a stunning red gown with a plunging neckline.

Opinion: ‘The benefits you get from being married to the narrator, cos let’s be honest she’s not a great host’

Murad added that it was ‘straight up nepotism’, continuing: ‘I think she suits Countdown, I’m not trying to be rude. The Weakest Link. An afternoon game show at 2pm.’

Rachel then went on to say: ‘When you think Love Island you don’t think Laura Whitmore’, before heaping praise on the late former host Caroline Flack.
