Lady Gaga Slams Trump for Proposal that Would Define Transgender Community Out of Existence

In case you weren’t aware, Lady Gaga, is very protective of the LGBTQ community — they don’t call her Mother Monster for nothing. On Monday, the pop singer took to Twitter to criticize the Trump administration’s move to dismiss the entire transgender population by literally defining them out of existence.

“The government may be living in an alternate universe, but we as a society & culture know who we are and know our truth and must stick together and raise our voices so we can educate them about gender identities,” she wrote in the post, with the addition of  hashtags #TransRightsAreHumanRights and #WontBeErased.

“While today you might feel unheard or unseen, know that this is not the reality of humanity. This is another display of leadership being driven by ignorance.” She followed up her response with a link to CBS article on gender identity terms, in hopes perhaps of educating the president.

According to a memo obtained by The New York Times on Sunday, the Trump administration is considering redefining gender as “a biological, immutable condition determined by genitalia at birth,” ultimately eliminating any recognition or protection that transgender people have under federal law. Per The Times report, the update will erase the very existence of transgender people in our society as “any dispute about one’s sex would have to be clarified using genetic testing.”

It was under the Obama administration that the definition of gender was loosened for federal programs, including in education and health care, where they recognized gender as an individual’s choice. The updates were fiercely opposed by many conservatives, especially evangelical Christians.

Lady Gaga has been a long-time advocate of the LGBTQ community. We only have to listen to hit song “Born The Way”, which has since become an LGBTQ anthem upon its release in 2011, to know the singer’s thoughts on whether being homosexual or transgender is choice.

Lady Gaga is not alone in her viewpoints on the memo. Other celebrities — notably trans women — have taken to social media slamming proposed definition change.

Transgender actress Laverne Cox responded on Sunday, tweeting out, “We must not give up the fight. But in the face of this affront on my existence and the existence of my community I choose love not fear. We exist and always have.” She followed up the post by encouraging her Massachusetts followers to vote “yes” on an initiative in the upcoming midterm elections to preserve the protection of trans rights in publics spaces.

Even Caitlyn Jenner, who has been previously supportive of the Trump administration, spoke out against the anti-trans initiative.

“The Trump administration has ferociously attacked my community again. Just as an FYI Mr. President – the military is the single largest employer of trans people in the world,” Jenner, 68, told People. “This leaked memo is an unacceptable attack on my community.”

As the attacks on the transgender community continue, expect to see many more celebrities using their voice to denounce the all of the hate.
