Last month, Kelly Clarkson filmed a pilot for a syndicated daytime talk show, which was all the information we had at the time. Now Deadline says that she’s bumping Steve Harvey out of his regular slot. If this was Family Feud, Steve Harvey might be asking you to name something that might have Steve Harvey anger-sweating into his mustache today.
NBCUniversal Domestic TV Distribution has sold the hour-long The Kelly Clarkson Show to the NBC Owned TV Station group. TKCS will air as the lead-in to Ellen (which is distributed by Warner Bros.) on NBC in all but one market. That’s bad news for people who had a routine that involved watching Steve Harvey lead into Ellen DeGeneres. For seven seasons, The Steve Harvey Show – which is now just called Steve – aired before Ellen, which is a little less than half the time Ellen has been on the air (it premiered in 2003).
This sudden replacement sounds like it might be because NBCUniversal isn’t so crazy about Steve Harvey anymore. In 2017, The Steve Harvey Show moved from Chicago to Los Angeles, and changed its name to simply Steve. He also marked the move with a bitchy memo instructing his new LA staff not to approach him or look him in the eye. Steve also cost a lot more money to produce.
Steve will get to lead into Ellen for the 2018/2019 season, but Kelly will replace him beginning Fall 2019. Deadline says they’ve heard that NBCUniversal has been telling people they no longer want to deal with distribution of Steve. IMG Original Content, which currently produces Steve, has reportedly had preliminary discussions about who might take the show. NBC hasn’t said anything about Steve’s possible move, but NBCUniversal Owned TV Stations president Valari Staab said this of Kelly Clarkson’s new show and time:
“We are very excited to have Kelly Clarkson on our air next fall. She’s genuine, warm, fun and interacts with her fans in a meaningful way. She will be the perfect companion to Ellen, providing an afternoon of great television.”
I’m still waiting on a comment confirming whether or not they hired Steve Carell to be her show’s announcer.
Putting Kelly before Ellen makes so much sense. Actually a lot more sense than Steve and Ellen. When Ellen makes you cringe, it’s probably because of something inoffensively corny, like saying “You go girl.” When Steve makes you cringe, it’s most likely because he said something insulting. Kelly is more like Ellen. Sure, you might find her dabbing during her monologue, but at least you know she won’t come back from the commercial break with a list of ten ways why your sad ass can’t land a man.
