Kanye West Staged an Easter “Sunday Service” at Coachella with Gospel Songs, Celebs and Expensive Merch

Kanye West was originally supposed to be a headliner at Coachella this year. But after a dispute over plans for massive dome structure that he wanted to have built in the middle of the festival for his performance, he pulled out and was replaced with a new headliner — Ariana Grande.

Still, behind the scenes, conversations apparently continued between Kanye’s team and the festival’s management team and the two sides came up with a strange compromise. Kanye would get a mini, artificial hill built just outside the main festival area, and he would hold a special version of one of his “Sunday Services” performances on Easter morning prior to any of Coachella’s scheduled sets would begin.

So, yesterday, Kanye held his Coachella Easter Sunday Service, with support from Chance the Rapper and DMX. In attendance were many other celebrities, including his wife Kim Kardashian, Khloe Kardashian, Kris Jenner, Kendall Jenner, Kylie Jenner, Travis Scott, Justin Bieber, Hailey Bieber, Jaden Smith,
Willow Smith, Teyana Taylor, Ty Dolla $ign, King Cudi, the members of Blackpink and many others.

Also in attendance — to almost everyone’s surprise — was an audience numbered by witnesses at over 50,000 early risers from among the Coachella faithful. Mostly by word of mouth, Kanye’s slant on an open-field Easter holiday church celebration had become a big thing.

After showing up a bit late, Kanye presided in purple clothing (and purple hair) over the event that combined Gospel and traditional Christian-oriented pop songs with stylized versions of Kanye’s biggest hits and Pablo-era tracks. He even debuted a new single, “Water” featuring Ty Dolla $ign.

Many, obviously, loved the unusual mashup of religious symbolism and Kanye-adoration. On the other hand, some others did not. Especially those who took exception to Kanye’s strategically-located merch tent that was selling $225 tees and $50 per pair “Church Socks” …

We have some pics and video of festivities below.
