Joaquin Phoenix wears iconic makeup as he channels the Joker while filming upcoming drama in NYC

They were back on the mean streets of Gotham City…errr, sorry, Manhattan, NYC, on Saturday.

Joaquin Phoenix and Zazie Beetz were seen filming director Todd Phillips’ Joker, the origins story of Batman’s most famous foe.

The actor was pictured with his complete Joker makeup as he threw himself into the chilling role.

The actor was seen on a subway platform, lifting up his mask before showing off his chilling complexion. 

In a separate scene, Joaquin filmed opposite co-star Zazie Beetz while channeling Arthur Fleck aka the Joker.

She wore a black leather jacket over a pink, button up dress and black court shoes with an orange leather bag over her shoulder.

At one point Todd, 47, stepped in to give Zazie some direction. He also chatted to both of his stars together before they filmed a scene.

The origin story sees Joaquin in the titular role even though Jared Leto played The Joker in 2016’s Suicide Squad.

Martin Scorsese is one of its producers, and THR reports that Robert De Niro will be in the movie as ‘a talk show host who is somehow instrumental in the Joker’s origin.’

Marc Maron appears as ‘an agent on Robert De Niro’s talk show who plays a part in booking Phoenix’s character, eventually causing him to go mad and become the Clown Prince of Crime,’ according to Variety.

Frances Conroy will play the Joker’s mother, Penny.

The origins script is reportedly loosely based on The Killing Joke, written by Alan Moore for DC Comics in 1988.

Helping his star: Director Todd Phillips chatted to Zazie about a scene

In that version, the Joker quits his job as a lab assistant and becomes a stand-up comedian to support his pregnant wife. Unsuccessful, he agrees to help mobsters with a robbery and dons the Red Hood, however, the heist goes awry.

The comedian leaps into a chemical vat to escape Batman, surfacing disfigured and this, along with the earlier accidental death of his wife and unborn child, drives the comedian insane and he becomes the Joker.

The film is due to be released on October 4, 2019.

Useful advice: He also spoke to both Zazie and Joaquin as the crew waited behind them for filming to begin. Joker is due out on October 4, 2019
