Jennifer Aniston on Why She Joined Instagram: You Can 'Right Some Wrongs'

Another one bites the dust.

That is the number of celebrities who choose not to have a presence on social media, namely on Instagram or Twitter. When Jennifer Aniston decided to join the world of likes, comments, and follows earlier this week, she inadvertently “broke” Instagram when she created a profile for herself. Continue reading to learn why the star of Netflix’s Murder Mystery (2019) decided to take the plunge and join Instagram.

Oct. 15, 2019, will forever be known as the day Aniston joined Instagram. In what is perhaps the best inaugural post to the photo and video sharing app ever, the 50-year-old shared a group selfie of her and the rest of her Friends co-stars including Matthew Perry, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, Courteney Cox, and Matt LeBlanc.

She captioned the post, “And now we’re Instagram FRIENDS too. Hi INSTAGRAM,” with a waving hand emoji. At the time of publication, the shot had more than 13 million likes and a bevy of comments from celebrities collectively freaking out about Aniston joining the platform.

During a guest spot on The Howard Stern Show, Aniston gave some context about the group selfie. She said she and her Friends co-stars had a reunion at Cox’s home.

“Schwimmer was in town, and we all happened to have a window of time, so we all got together,” she explained to Howard Stern, the host of the radio program. “Oh my God, we laughed so hard.”

Why Jennifer Aniston says she joined Instagram

In the past, Aniston has been open about her feelings regarding social media. She said she avoided it to maintain her sanity. Obviously, she’s changed her mind about Instagram.

According to Entertainment Tonight per The Washington Post, that happened thanks to her friend and Morning Show co-star, Reese Witherspoon, who presented Aniston with arguments about why she should join.

“You can actually have a little bit more control over the narrative that’s out there,” Aniston told ET. “[You can] right some wrongs and some silly things that, God knows, are said often,” she added.

Jennifer Aniston responded to question about Ross and Rachel

Perhaps the best welcome (of sorts) came from former star of The Bachelorette, Kaitlyn Bristowe. She asked Aniston in the comments section, a very important question Friends fans have been dying to know since the show ended: “ARE YOU AND ROSS STILL TOGETHER!!???” she asked. Amazingly, Aniston replied bringing up the very controversial “we were on a break” drama on the show between her and Schwimmer’s characters.

“Well we’re on a break,” Aniston said, leading to another Instagram freak-out.

Then she spread the love even more by sharing celebrity reactions to her joining the app on her Instagram Stories. Clearly, there’s not much of a learning curve for Aniston. She knows what she’s doing.

In fact, with her Instagram debut, she broke a world record, according to USA Today. In only five hours and 16 minutes, Aniston had one million followers setting a new record for the fastest time. She took the title from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who launched their joint Instagram account (@sussexroyal) in April 2019. They’ve been making the press “redundant” with the use of the app, photographers say.
