In response to the rejection, he posted on Instagram: ‘ Absolutely livid Tesco. I was only trying to do my bit.

He went on to joke that he’ll be keeping an eye on the new employee, and said: ‘I hope the better person got and enjoys the job, I’ll be watching.’

Struggle: Last month, Jason admitted he broke down in tears at the thought of having to learn to be a ‘full-time dad’ again in lockdown, speaking during an appearance on The Steph Show

He opened up about his fears to host Steph McGovern on Channel 4’s The Steph Show, admitting his emotional moment was triggered by his tour being cancelled due to the coronavirus crisis.

The star has three children with first spouse Catherine and two young kids with TV producer wife Lucy Dyke, who he wed in 2017.

Jason said: ‘I did have a worry at the beginning because I was supposed to be on tour and it all got cancelled.

‘I was driving home from Leicester and I’d been doing eight shows a week and I’d been touring since September, and I had a moment where I cried a little bit in the car with worry at the whole situation, but also thinking I’m going to have retrain myself to be a full-time dad when I get back.’

‘Because I’ve sort of not being doing that. I’ve been a bit of the old fashioned bread-winner, getting out and putting the dinner on the table.

‘To get home and do the homeschooling and the cooking and finding out about their friends… it’s a totally different world.

‘We’ve all had the rug pulled out from underneath us. Whatever situation you’re in, it’s totally different to what it was a month ago.’

Despite initially worrying there would be a ‘divorce boom’ instead of a ‘baby boom’ in lockdown, Jason confessed he’s been cherishing every moment spent with his loved ones.

‘We’ve actually had a lovely time’, he enthused, admitting being cooped up indoors together wasn’t all bad.

Jason also revealed he’s taken a mortgage holiday, describing it as ‘one of the worst holidays I’ve ever had in my life’.

During his appearance on The Steph Show, it was also revealed that the comedian recently came to the rescue of a teacher in need.

He explained: ‘We’ve all had the rug pulled out from underneath us. Whatever situation you’re in, it’s totally different to what it was a month ago’

After seeing the plight of primary school teacher Jenny Williams who had her bicycle stolen, Manford bought her a new bike.

He said: ‘I feel a bit embarrassed telling you that story. I saw it on Facebook, she needed a new bike so I bought her one so she can carry teaching keyworkers’ children.’

Jenny Williams sent her thanks to the comedian and musical theatre star, saying: ‘A massive heartfelt thanks to Jason for restoring not only my faith in humanity but giving the children a real-life hero story.

‘Your generosity has lifted my spirits and I feel very lucky to be able to continue to cycle to work and support the keyworkers at this critical time. Rest assured, the bike will remain locked up at all times.’

The Steph Show airs daily at midday on Channel 4. Catch up on All 4.
