Inside the Royal Family’s most bizarre celeb friendships as Tom Cruise presents Jubilee

It’d be quite the occasion having tea with the Queen, or heading out for a spot of shopping with Kate Middleton and it turns out, if you’re a celeb, you’ve got quite the chance of that happening, with a range of stars having close friendships with the royals.

Here’s a look at some of the celebrities who count the Royal Family as friends…

The Beckhams

The Beckhams and the the Royal Family have often been sighted together, including at Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding in 2011 and Meghan Markle and Harry’s in 2018. David and Victoria also scored an invitation to meet the Queen at Buckingham Palace.

Elton John

Sir Elton John was famously pals with Princess Diana before her untimely death in 1997. The star performed his song Candle in the Wind for the late Princess, at her funeral.

Ellie Goulding

I Need Your Love singer, Ellie Goulding, is known to be pally with the Royal Family. The star performed at William and Kate’s wedding in 2011, and she’s a good friend of Princess Eugenie’s too. Ellie went on holiday to Jordan with Eugenie and Princess Beatrice in 2018, and the sisters attended Ellie and Caspar Joplin’s wedding in the summer of 2019.

Rod Stewart

Rod Stewart and Prince Charles go way back, with the pair having been good friends for years. Rod was the ambassador for Charles’ foundation, the Prince’s Trust, and they hung out at Charles’ 60th birthday bash, with Rod doing what he does best and taking to the microphone for a song.

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman

Despite not being together any more, former power couple, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, were friends with the late Princess Diana and met her at a screening of Far and Away in 1992. Both the stars attended her funeral. Tom is also pally with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and recently, according to The Sun, Kate and William enjoyed a viewing of Top Gun: Maverick at Leicester Square, arranged by none other than Tom himself

Serena Williams

Tennis star Serena Williams is good friends with Meghan Markle, and the two have known each other for years. Meghan has described the tennis legend as one of her “closest friends,” and Serena co-hosted Meghan’s baby shower for Archie.

Reese Witherspoon

American actress Reese Witherspoon met Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, as Kate toured Canada and North America in 2011. The two reportedly hit it off, with Kate sending Reese a gift when her son, Tennessee, was born in 2012.

Tom Hanks

Forrest Gump star Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson met Princess Diana on several occasions and they attended her funeral in 1997, along with director Steven Spielberg and actor Tom Cruise.

Eddie Redmayne

Another actor who has a tight knit relationship with the royal family is Eddie Redmayne, with the Oscar-winner having attended the same college, Eton, as Prince William. They even played on the same rugby team!

Usain Bolt

Jamaican sprint legend Usain Bolt is known to be a good friend of Harry’s and joked that he’d throw Harry three bachelor parties ahead of his wedding to Meghan.

“I’m thinking about having three. My idea is to have one in Kingston, one in Vegas, and one in London," he said. "I know it’s a lot to ask but these are his last nights of freedom. I will personally call Meghan and take responsibility for getting him home safely after each."
