How John Travolta Confused Taylor Swift With Drag Queen Jade Jolie at VMAs 2019

John Travolta continues his streak of creating memorable moments at award shows and this time it happened at the MTV VMAs 2019. The Hairspray star took the stage with Queen Latifah to present the Video of the Year category and incurred in a slip-up at the moment of handing out the moon person trophy to its recipient Taylor Swift.

How did John Travolta mistake Taylor Swift for Jade Jolie?

Following the announcement of the nominees competing for the top award of the night, Travolta told Latifah to read the winner as he didn’t want to “f*** it up.” The Grease film legend was most likely recalling the 2014 Oscars ceremony when he messed up Idina Menzel’s name and called her “Adele Dazeem.”

When Swift’s music video “You Need To Calm Down” was announced as the winner, her and her group of friends took the stage to receive the award. Travolta had the moon person trophy and was about to hand it to someone that kind of looks like the singer-songwriter.

Turns out that person was RuPaul’s Drag Race alum, Jade Jolie, who was in drag as Swift like in the music video.

In the above picture, you can see the uncanny resemblance of Swift and Jolie and can’t blame Travolta for mistaken them. The awkward moment has now gone viral on social media with fans watching the clip on a loop.

How did VMA viewers react to funny Travolta moment?

Viewers watching the VMAs live had a field day on social media sharing memes and their reactions to the honest mistake.

“John Travolta thought Jade Jolie was Taylor when he was handing over the moon [person] for Vid[eo] of the Year. I’ve been laughing for the past ten minutes,” a fan tweeted.

“John Travolta becoming the white Steve Harvey just in a day and [he’s] bald too,” another viewer posted recalling the time the Miss Universe host read the wrong winner’s name during a tense final.

What did Taylor Swift say at the VMAs?

Swift was oblivious to the confusion and gave a powerful speech about the Equality Act she is fully committed to supporting and part of the video that won the top award of the night.

“I just want to say that this is a fan-voted award. So, I first want to say thank you to the fans because in this video, several points were made, so you voting for this video means that you want a world where we’re all treated equally,” Swift said accepting the trophy.

She continued: “Regardless of who we are, regardless of how we identify, at the end of this video there was a petition — and there still is a petition for the Equality Act, which basically just says we all deserve equal rights under the law.”

The music star ended her speech by throwing shade at the White House for not reaching out to her camp even though the petition has enough signatures to warrant consideration.

“I want to thank everyone who signed that petition because it now has half-a-million signatures, which is five times the amount that it would need to warrant a response from the White House,” Swift added looking down at her wrist simulating looking at a watch.

Swift has been open about her political views as of late, reversing her silence through the 2016 Presidential Election where she didn’t endorse either of the candidates running.

“The things that happen to you in your life are what develop your political opinions. I was living in this Obama eight-year paradise of, you go, you cast your vote, the person you vote for wins, everyone’s happy!” she told The Guardian. “This whole thing, the last three, four years, it completely blindsided a lot of us, me included.”
