Holly Willoughby turned 40 on Wednesday [10 February] and to celebrate the milestone birthday, the This Morning team, surprised her by inviting three of her oldest friends onto the show to share some fun memories of their schooldays. Appearing via video link, they touched on everything from boys to her infamous laughing fits – something Holly is still known for now alongside her co-star Phillip Schofield on the ITV daytime chat show.

See! I was brave once

But out of all the stories her three pals told, there were two that really stuck out.

One of which, was when she was attacked by two angry swans on a trip to the Isle of Wight.

The memorable anecdote left Phil surprised Holly showed true bravery as he heard the tall tale.

“We were in a dinghy paddling round the marina and we were attacked by a very grumpy pair of swans,” her friend remembered.

“And Holly being the superstar she is, managed to scramble onto the jetty and pull the dinghy to safety.”

But her heroism wasn’t without its consequences.

Her friend continued, wincing: “In doing so, she got splinters all stuck up her nails and ended up with my mum having to pull the splinters out.

“But she did save us all from the swans!”

Holly giggled as she exclaimed: “See! I was really brave once!”

Phil was in shock as he responded: “You were brave, which is extraordinary considering you did push me under a horse to get it out of the way of you.”

The birthday girl threw her head back in laughter as she cackled: “I remember that!”

While the swan story painted the ITV star in a heroic light, she was left blushing after another of her life-long friends let slip she once wet herself from laughing so much.

The guest recalled: “This is not a new thing!

“We used to giggle so much Holly would spend most of her time squatting on the floor trying not to wet herself.”

Her pal added: “I’m sorry Holly, despite your best efforts, you didn’t always succeed in not.”

The presenter looked red-faced as she finished the story, telling viewers: “I wet myself at school all the girls had to take their jumpers off, tie them round me, and run to the loo where I had to dry my school uniform under the hand drier!”

Phil looked on in disgust as she turned her attention to him, warning him that history might one day repeat itself.

“Which is why I say to you one day it will happen because I’ve got previous!” she snorted.

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
